setting tonight/tomorrow 5/20-5/21/15

I've peaked at a few of mine and definitely see some veining in a few white ones. Our first attempt with an incubator was awful after having a power outage that lasted most of a day everything was developing until we had the power outage on day 10 so there went 14 eggs! This time we set 41 hoping for at least 20 chicks but trying to not get my hopes up too high!

You guys are killing me, I'm dying to candle! I can't wait for the kids to go back to school tomorrow so I can get some quiet time to sit down and candle, I need to add some water...maybe I'll take a quick peek!!!!

Ok, I took a quick look. They are upright in cartons, so I didn't even pick them up, just shined the light into the air cell. 12 out of 15 are developing nicely!!! So happy for day 5!! Have a great day guys!!

Hey everyone! I hope I'm not joining to late for this but I set about 54 eggs on the 22 of May in my homemade incubator. They are barred rocks, English buffs and austrolorps. I'm having a difficult time keeping the temperate steady. It keeps bouncing around between 95 and 103, does any one have tips or suggestions to keep it steady?

What kind of thermostat are you running and do you have other thermometers to verify?

Right now I'm using the little giant heating element and thermostat that I took out and put in to my homemade Incubator because t could hold more eggs. The only other think I could do is switch it out with a light bulb system I guess.@fire370

Are the thermometers calibrated?

I have never personally done this, but I have read of others adding clean rocks to the bator. The rocks will hold the temp and help to prevent temp swings. Slight temp changes for short periods of time happen (I think in almost every bator). It took me a long time to learn that if you need to make changes in temp to do it slowly, and let the bator stablize before making other changes... otherwise you are working against yourself/driving yourself crazy. Making sure your thermometers are right is also a big issue. I was going off of a "bad" thermometer for 5 days which had been right for a previous hatch. I took for granted that it was still right (lesson learned to check thermometers before each use).
