Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

Chickenlicken- I just bought the same type of incubator from tsc- it was on sale getting ready for chick days. I've been wanting one but didn't want to geta still air bator after getting info from byc. Never hatched my own before, only put a light on some 'rescued' turkey eggs that all hatched after a few days. Hubby's work crew doing their job and had found nest where they had to put in a road. I didn't know anything about poultry back then and just got into chickens last year. I've already stopped and talked chicken hatching eggs with a couple of locals so I'm getting the new bator warmed up! I'm going to do a test run with 4 of my own rir eggs after it gets to steady temp.

Welcome! Will this be your first hatch? I've had good luck with my Little Giant bator and I prefer still air with an egg turner. Hope you will have success with it as well. How's the temp and humidity?

Good luck and keep us updated of the progress.

I found mine at Wal-Mart Yep they carry almost everything there. I still have not candled any eggs. I will do that on sun. or mon. to tell the truth I am just a bit hesitant this time with shipped eggs. shudder esp after the top two were frozen during shipment. I should have let yard full of rocks know he is a really great guy . They were wrapped to perfection and it was not his fault. It was NOT ANYONES really except the weather at the time. Who knows We may get lucky and some of them be winners after all. Say a little prayer. .

I will check my Wal-Mart for it and I'm hoping when you candle your eggs, there are lots of veins in there.

My crooked toe chick is doing fine and perching well. They were sunbathing today too! Hoping the toes will straighten out.

Hello and welcome to the hatching party!  :welcome   That's great that you have so many veining eggs. How's your temp and humidity? What breed are the shipped eggs? Good luck and keep us posted!

The shipped eggs are bantam cochin eggs. We have had some issues with keeping temp and humidity where we want them but seem to be holding steady with one thermometer reading about 99 and one reading around 100 and things seem to be developing on track for as far as I can remember from raising chickens when I was young. My daughter is loving the whole process especially since she knows they will be a little young to really compete come fair time. But she just decided recently on a breed and really wanted to hatch them herself. She is even selling her own eggs from her small barred rock flock to pay her daddy for her cochin eggs. I am really loving sharing this with her.

Moved 4 silkies to the brooder (one more Lavender hatched last night)....things seemed to slow down so I got some R&R only to wake at 3am to check on them and another Lavender was hatching yea...now I'm sitting here with coffee in hand..ugggg at 3am haha

. One of my partridge eggs has been pip'd since yesterday and seems slow moving. I can see him through the pip and he's still moving so thats good. They appear to be hatching by color haha all my Partridges are pip'd and then all i have left is my b/s eggs and my three Porcelains that I desperatley want to pip! The Porcelains are the ones I wanted most and of course they are gonna wait till last to show signs of life

Looks like my lavenders have some massive vaulted skulls :) too cute! the babies in the brooder are all snuggled up under a teddy bear!

Morning! Sounds like when my chicks hatched. I was up and down all night checking on them and watching for new pips or pips that had turned into zips! So exciting but exhausting...more for us than the chicks I think... LOL! Porcelain color babies would be so beautiful! Sounds like you will have a beautiful assortment of colors...can't wait to see them all dry and fuzzy! Get some rest...

Temp 99-100 sounds good! How's the humidity holding? I'm sure your daughter is super excited. It is so cool for kids to see the miracle of life growing inside an egg. From seeing the veins of the embryo growing in the egg to watching the chick pip and finally seeing the chick push out of the egg! Amazing! I get sooo excited wiht the process and I only imagine how excited she must be! Good luck!

Humidity around 50 to 60 which is what was recommended by another local hatcher. Our issue has been keeping humidity and temp both where we want them at the same time. So far all seems to be developing on track as far as I can tell. Hoping all works out fingers crossed! I am just as excited now as I was when I hatched eggs as a kid didn't see that coming lol.

They are so cute!! So jealous! Catdance babies are on my desperately desire list!! I am trying to pace myself! Haha! So encouraged to see you having a successful hatch! Can I ask what your humidity day 1-18, then lockdown was? I want to tuck the info away for next time! Congrats!

Unplugged both vents- thanks for the advice. Humidity came down to 50 temp steady. This is a test run and I'm not sure how the eggs are as they were collected up to 4 days after roo taken out. I think I won't put very much water in when I start next hatch so humidity won't be as high. Should be trading rir eggs for americauna/aracauna mix eggs in a few weeks. Guy that bought dozen on 13th wants more and I asked what chickens he had. Can't wait!

I'm using a brinsea octagon 20 digital (older model) had temp at 99.5 steady and humidity around 40%. at lockdown I up'd humidity to 60-65%. Have 8 babies hatched so far...had so many either pip'd or hatching last night, that when I went to move 4 of the babies to the brooder I saw a egg that had zip'd 1/4 around the egg and stopped....pulled it out and sure enough the lavender baby was gone

...More bothered than I thought I would be( she was beautiful too! vaulted skull the yolk was absorbed so must have been weak?!) . Haven't lost a chick yet ever even with my winter shipments of day olds.. have 4 eggs left (of course all my porcelains and one b/s) one POR is pip'd and just sitting there talking to me through the hole
yippiechickie.gif
taunting me cause it knows after loosing one I will not sleep till she it out. I'm thinking my humidity might be a little low because the membrane is sticking to them making it hard to hatch (is this shrink wrapping as some say?) it was glued to one chick?!

As for the other 3 eggs...no movement...not sure if they will hatch..still gonna leave them in there and wait and see.
