Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

It was probably me. So let me get this straight:

You can have fertilized eggs stored in an egg carton, in a cool room, large ends up, for up to 2 weeks max and they could still be fine?

I am buying my eggs locally so should I still let them set for 24 hours or put them into the incubator right away?

Chook, you can store hatching eggs at a cool temp (60-65) til you have enough to set in the bator for those using their own hens eggs. They may pratice this but as Glria Jean said, the sooner they go in the bator, the better.

Local eggs are ok to put in the bator without a 24 hour resting period being that they didn't get tossed around a post office like shipped eggs would have. Good Luck!!!

Hey Justine,

They seem to be getting around much better today. Eating and drinking well... Just a little wobbly on their feet/paddles. I will remove one bandaid tomorrow to see if they've made any progress.

Congrats on your sale!! I wish I lived nearby, I'd love some homegrown chicklets!

Geting ready Lockdown starts tomorrow for my Catdance babies..Delisha I am noticing clear space around a couple of my chicks in the egg too. hoping they hatch. I do see movement in all of them but some are dark all the way to the air cell and other I still see veining and some clear

Morning! Just noticed something with one of my Ameraucana/EE chicks. It has a couple of toes that curve to the side, not under! Is this crooked toe? Can I do something at this point being that the chick is one week old? Never had this issue before. The rest are all fine.

Melinda - is this what your chicks toes were doing? Curled under or curved to the side?

Wish you were closer too. I would love for you to have some of these cute fuzzy babies. How many miles is it straight up the East Coast from FL to ME?

Too bleeping far! Took us two days a couple of years ago, my DH could tell you the mileage as he drove most of the way!
My chick's toes curled under but not crooked per se. They seem to be separate issues from what I've read.
Try this web site that I just found this am http://www.peafowl.org/ARTICLES/1/ if the link doesn't work google Orthopedics for Poultry made Easy for Beginners.
It is a different splint from the one I made but is worth a try.
I just taped their toes in proper position (based on a couple of threads here on BYC) - bottom of foot first. Once I had the toes where I thought they ought to be, I taped another piece of bandaid to the tops of the toes, pressing well to seal. I then trimmed the excess as best I could so they could get around. You definitely need someone to assist in the process. Now way to do this by myself.

I purchased Rooster Booster brand "Poultry Booster"; it contains lots of vitamins and minerals and can be given to poultry of all ages. I do have to mash it up with my mortar & pestle as the pellets are VERY hard (no way babies could eat it). I have also been poaching some beef liver (about a teaspoon, minced) - it's the best source of riboflavin (aka B2 vit.). You should see them devour the liver - like they haven't seen food. I cannot find anything that says I can't give them liver so hope it's not a bad thing. Curly toe can be caused by a B2 deficiency or be genetic or be due to difficulty in hatching..... too many variables. I'm covering my bases. Let me know how it turns out; this doesn't seem to be an unusual problem once you start searching the threads... have a great day! It's snowing again here & we're expecting 60mph wind gusts, :he

Thanks for the advice/info. We are working on it right now. From what I have read on the web, it can be genetic. It's on one foot only, 2 two toes. Thankfully not both.

One day DH and I will take a roadtrip up to ME (in the Summer or Fall) and I'll tell you when. It would be fun to meet another BYCer. Plus I've never been to ME. I'll Google Earth your town....LOL! I saw Portland which looks nice. It's high of 55 today here with winds but tomorrow high of 68. Have a great day too.

Hey Justine, here is a good photo of the pipe cleaner and tape setup... just scroll down a bit.
ChickenChatter.org > Chicken Chatter > Medical Issues > Crooked Toes??
going to try to attach picture here, but not sure if it'll work.

That's a great example. I was thinking of using toothpicks with tape! My DH is trying to help me tape the chick's tiny toes with his big man hands...LOL!

Here's the chick...the white one in the middle. She runs around fine and scratches the pine shavings like normal.

I have a Gold Laced Wyandotte that has a crooked toe on each inside toe. It's two years old and totally healthy! I think they will be fine!
