SEVERE BIRTH DEFECTS. Graphic Pics.

This is the confirmed genetic form of cross beak that few ever see. The chicks this badly deformed do not make it out of the shell. If you know which are the parents I'd be doing some switching up because it looks like both are carrying the gene for the defect.

For those that don't have Genetics of the Fowl this has been an excellent teaching topic. Thanks for posting it, NT.

I thought about that too, anencephaly, but think maybe it's more acalvaria. It looks like both hemispheres are there, but I am hardly a chicken brainiac. There's also no eye on the left at all, so it seems the deformity is a general neural tube type thing. Go figure. When we think about all the moments in development where something can go so wrong, it's amazing that any of us make it out OK.

I'm hatching this batch for a third party, but I will certainly let them know.

If this could be a genetic thing, do try your best to get new parents. You probably don't want anything else like this to happen, so you should probably do your best to prevent it.
