severe head damage. please help

thats about how mine looks, with the same thing on her head but...:sick

Yes, it really can look terrible. They healed up really, really fast though. We never did much but quarantine for a day or so, and no-one died! They went back to their respective cages (at this point there were 2 males + 7 females per cage), and then someone else would be injured the next day. Rotating quails (males and females) through the "hospital" till we culled most of the males, keeping only the ones we wanted, and paring them down to 1 male+5 females per cage.

This is exactly why I always keep blu-kote on hand, though I haven't needed it for my quail. Had a chicken with a tear on the back of her head. I sprayed her with blu-kote and put her back with the flock. Other than the lovely blue tattoo you wouldn't even know she was hurt. Birds are so resilient, it's amazing.

If you continue to have boinking problems you may want to change your set-up. If it keeps happening it means something keeps scaring them. First thing is to make sure you have plenty of space. There may be something in the immediate vicinity that it bothering them (like maybe a predator). It could be one of the cage-mates is too aggressive. Having places for them to run and hide can help reduce boinking, and stress in general. Some folks also line the top of the cages with foam to help reduce injuries.

so update. she is doing GREAT!!! she is preening, and eating and drinking. she took what might have been a dust bath had she not decided that the effort was to annoying. she is scratching around and seems to be doing amazing. thank you all etso much for the help.

some thing scared me really bad a couple nights ago. after i fell asleep it started raining. there was one time in the night when the sky was dumping buckets, and to my foggy brain, it sounded like a dog running on our tile floor. (we have had a rouge cat come into my ROOM, attack my CAT, and then had THE NERVE TO pee on my carpet!:rant) so i think i levitated of my bed and dropped on my feet and then teleported to my quails 'bedside', i was there so fast. of course they where fine, and i went back to bed.
