Severe Scaly Leg Mites

Quote: vet rx will work, but its alot of applications and a little slow, you have to make sure you get the oil under the scales when you use it. its better for prevention than as a cure - but on a limited budget with lots of time it works well. i have seen people say when they treated with vet rx, the mites would leave one and get on the next. if using it treat all birds in the coop.

If you are using vaseline... you will only need to apply once a week... usually within two weeks the scales will slough off and you should apply for up to eight weeks to ensure all the leg mites have gone... sometimes the leg mites can also affect the head of the chicken... be aware that any feather loss in the head area may be due to the scaly leg mites... you can rub a little vaseline into the comb and head area... it also has the benefit of protection against frost on their combs.

Tonight I applied vegetable oil with a toothbrush. I could already see areas where the scales were sloughing off.

Taking her off the roost at night was the best idea. It was much easier than trying to catch her with a net.

Thank you for all the advice! Maybe I'll stick with the vaseline, if I only have to do it once a week.

One of my chickens has a severe case of scaly leg mites. She is our shyest chicken so we did not notice until we saw her limping today. One leg is so bad it looks like a growth on the side of her leg.

We caught her (with a net, unfortunately) and washed her legs and generously applied vaseline. I have read through a lot of information and haven't seen a case with the growth looking part. I have read that you have to reapply vaseline rather frequently. I do not see this as an option because it took us a long time to catch her and I don't want to stress her out that frequently.

She is the only one of our four chickens that has an issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
A friend of mine had a chicken with severe scaley leg mites. She gave it me as she didn’t have time to treat it every day. The feet on the left are what they looked like when I got her and now, about a month later, they look like the feet on the right. I’m using Vaseline and also scarlet red oil. I mix it but then I read somewhere that the scarlet red oil may not kill the mites so I’ve been leaving it out this past week. I do know that her legs were very painful and me putting on the scarlet oil seemed to really irritate her feet. I read that vetrx does not kill mites.
