How did you remove the bone? I have a duck with a compound broken humerus sticking out. I think it needs to come off just to keep a wind from dragging and at least try to stave off infection. He doesn't seem to mind the broken wing at all. Did you subdue the bird at all before the surgeries?
I trimmed it off with pair of sharp diagonal cutters. She was pretty quiet so I just held her still while I worked on her. Do you have pictures of your duck's wing?

It is that dark area. I’ve been cleaning it and it smells fine. Duck appears in good spirit. He moves it when he flaps the good one. I don’t know if the picture worked but it’s just the muscles holding it together. I’d leave it but man that bones is out and there’s a bit of a cavity at the injury site I’m afraid won’t heal over either. I’ve seen animals be amazing though.

I honor your attempt to try to save the bird. Birds have an open system were the infection may already be spread into her blood system including her internal organs. Even if she survives this horor the other chickens may ostracize the chicken due to her defect and worse yet peck at her and keep her from the water and feed because they now recognize her as different. The injured bird will not be able to defend herself as she would in her normal state. Sorry but keeping a flock of chickens does have a down side. I wish you success but the bird may be too far gone and may need to be culled.

I get it, no issues putting an animal down, but when they're happy with their injury I'm less inclined to jump for that solution. I like to think if it were me what would I want, so that's how I roll out the decisions. Nothing appears infected.

This was the film from the vet. It cost $200. The wing is off and Winky is doing remarkably well. It was a very tough surgery and took every bit of me and three of my kids. I think if infection can be held at bay it will be successful. It has been a little over 48 hours.

My hen had a similar issue from a hawk attack. I cleaned the wound and wrapped the wing to her body for two or three weeks changing the bandages routinely. The bone healed and the skin grew over it, she’s a happy girl!
