SEVIN (Carbaryl) Powder Being Discontinued...

Have known of this new restriction from the EPA for a year or 2 now. This is a good thing since Feed Grade DE will do the same thing and is a "natural/organic product".
We own a Garden Center/Lawn Care business. For the passed 15 years all new and existing customers lawns/gardens contracts we have are 90% organic/natural.
Personally would never use sevin in any form since the chemical it is made from (carbyl) affects the nervous system and the symptoms do not go away.

When I did wildbird rehab, Sevin dust 5% was recommended by our wildlife vet to use on those birds that came in with mites.

It is not toxic to them and worked.

Thanks for the heads up...

We'll stock up on this now in case we need it for our chicks.

As far as what the EPA is saying..it is not our experience that Sevin has had any detrimental effect and I think the whole EPA thing is a NON-ISSUE...IOW: BS. Just MO. I have not much use for anything that comes from the EPA.

I love our birds, both domesticated and wild ones and will do what's best for them, as far as my knowledge takes me.

Of course, I am open to new information, provided it is sourced and reputable.

Hi 1birdlady,

I understand what you say about the EPA, my concern is that it is not the EPA requesting the change, it is Ortho.

Why would Ortho ask the EPA to change the acceptable uses of a product unless they had fears about potential lawsuits?

That's what gives me pause about using it.

Be careful with the Sevin dust (carbayl 5%). It does work well, but it seems to be more toxic to mammals and insects than it is to birds. I dusted the coop yesterday and forgot to wear a mask. About 2 hours later I had diarrhea and NAUSEA for a couple hours. Luckily that was all. Apparently it can be a lot worse if you accidentally eat it. QUESTION: should I avoid eating eggs for a week or ??? I read that it clears through mammals (cows) in 3 days. We have used it to dust the chickens for years, but this time I was so fed up with stick-tight fleas I used more Sevin dust that I have before, first time I dusted the whole coop (light dusting i thought, just forgot to WEAR A MASK and LONG SLEEVES...oops)!

Companies petition for the EPA to amend their permits all the time. It's usually business reasons, not that they think it will hurt anyone. For example, perhaps using DE to carry the carbaryl is much more expensive than selling a liquid formulation where the carbaryl is carried by water and a surfactant, so they don't want the powder to be on the market any more because they don't make as much money from it. This forces everyone to use the liquid and Ortho makes higher profits.

Ive had sevin granuales around my house the last 2 months and there's no signs of my brooders pecking on them. I scooped them up and will switch to diatomaceous earth w/ bentonite clay instead and reapply after every heavy rain to keep bugs and ants out of the house. Im in the sticks. Can chickens smell? The old Sevin granule stuff stinks pretty bad. Aren't these the birds that eat Styrofoam?

Sorry everyone but no tears here..... the stuff is plan ole poison, kills honey bees and really you use it in your garden.....yikes!
