Sevin Dust Question

I usually have my husband put the DE down for me. He wears a mask and he has been just fine. He gets mad at me when I ask him to do it, he says "what you trying to kill me off! " LOL. The Sevin and the Adams, no problems I do the coops and the birds.

I'm gonna try that, it sounds like a good idea! I dunno about the bag though, I would think the chicken would shred a plastic bag while it was attempting escape!
I've also heard that you can give the chickens a dust bath (like a sandbox for kids) and put DE and/ or Sevin dust in with the sand and the chickens will end up doing it themselves... I haven't tried this method yet, I am still working on a roof so the sandbox stays dryish.

Your emoticon smiley faces now have me laughing hysterically!! I too ahd thought about them shredding a garbage bag and thought I may look for a nylon type of bag that would be more sturdy! I should be in for quite a day tomorrow.......with any luck though, having Sevin on me from this will make the itchy feeling that I have just thinking abou tit go away!

I use Sevin Dust all the time...sprinkle it all around under the straw when I clean the nests/run/coop, even use it on my counter top for ants and on the floor under the cat litter pans.

Great stuff and never had a problem. I never put a live chicken in a bag though

just sprinkled their feather butts.

I'm with you about the DE. Breathing it in. I use the Sevin dust and you can actually find a poultry dust at Orscheln. I have spent tons of money on organic dusts and wasted my money. My coop is so clean and I spend a lot of time with my birds and I still find they get bugs. Must be nature. I do the dust once a month just to control it.

My coop is really clean - brand new as a matter of fact plus I change the pine shavings frequently but I think I know what the culprit(s) are. When I first started out buying chickens and really didn't know what I was looking for/at, I won two hens on an Eggbid auction. I did quarantine them but again, didn't know how to really check them out. The man I got them from was not the best person I have ever dealt with and the two hens didn't look nearly as good upon arrival as the others I had gotten - sort of scraggly, etc. Since it seems to be one of those hens who is infested the worst of all the group, I truly think they came from those two birds. First off, you have to determine if lice/mites are present. To do this, pick a couple birds off the roost tonight and check under their tail and around their vent with a good flashlight. If you see any minute little bugs scurrying for cover, you`ve got them.

To treat them as radically as you can without affecting egg eddibility, get some Adams flea and tick dip. Mix it up as directed in a 5 gallon bucket, and proceed to dip EVERY bird on the place. Do it on a warm morning so they have a warm day to dry.

Clean out the litter from the coop and dust heavily with sevin dust. Don`t forget the nests. Replce with clean litter. If showering with hot water and soap, includiing a good shampoo doesn`t make you feel like they are all off of you, do it again.

Like I said, you can eat the eggs and this treatment will get the new ones as they hatch. In fact, you can still smell it for at least a month, but it`s not offensive. Good luck........Pop
