Sex Link Chickens

Leghorns are dominant white and won't breed true.
Leghorns are not just dominant white, they are the most powerfull melanin inhibitors put together in one chicken, they are not know for Silver, and no matter what you cross with a leghorn ALL chicks, male and female will be born mostly yellow(with the ofther parent color leakage).

If your wanting a sex-link use delawares. A delaware hen crossed with a RIR male will make a sex-link chick every time.

Males will be white..... females red.

I'm going to try in the summer to cross a few to see what I get.

Been breeding sex link colors in birds for years, its the male that carry the sex link color hid. Peafowl colors are peach,cameo, and purple. Same with parakeets and cockatiel have sex link color.

The red in chickens the male must be pure red. Hens can not carry sex link color hidden.

So the rooster is red to white hen = White males and red or buff females chicks.


RIR or NH X White rock = Golden comet RED hens brown egg layer heavy chicks ,so male can be butcher.

RIR or NH X white leghorn= Redstar red hens light weight chick, males have very little meat. White male with some color on the back

If a male sexlink , say a golden comet rooster is bred to white hens, you will get white in both sex, any red chicks will be hens


The white golden comet rooster, carry the red sex link color hidden.

Would a buff orp rooster over a cuckoo marans hen produce chicks that can be sex-linked?

I'm sure I don't know but have noticed that there are Silver Leghorns, McMurray sells them but maybe they aren't really silver . . .

?

I think I remember reading that Silver Spangled Hamburgs are somehow different genetically.

Using RIR or NHR over barred rocks looks like an absolute sure bet for a Black SL. As to whether the Cuckoo Marans have the same barring as other barred birds, Buster, . . . I would have guessed so.

Thanks digitS. I definitely have some breeds that I'll be working with specifically to produce sex-linked chicks for local buyers. The reason I ask is because I hatched about 10 of these BO/ Cuckoo Marans crosses recently and it never occurred to me that they may have been sex-linked. I believe Cuckoo Marans are sex-linked, the males are lighter than the females I think. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.​

Okay I have been reading this thread and I have a question, I just hatched chicks with a BLRW roo and a California White Leghorn, is there any way to tell the sex?
