We noticed recently our golden sex link Amber is not doing well. No other birds are sick. All were recently wormed due to worms being spotted in some poop. Unknown which bird had worms so we assumed all did. This was when we noticed Amber was extremely thin, and that she was getting weak. We hoped worming would take care of her, but it has not.

She has watery stool with no blood evident. She DOES eat and drink, but is very weak. She is so thin though that the cool nights are proving hard on her. We are segregating her tonight, with a heat lamp, in hopes of keeping her alive. She has no signs of respiratory disease. She is 18months old.

I got some Corid today, to give to her. If it helps, I will dose all the hens with it. I figured her weight is about 2# and that worked out to 6 drops of Corvid, based on what I saw with the conversion data online.

Can I give the Corvid via dropper straight down her throat? I worry she would not get enough water/medicine combo to do her any good. If the first dose helps, I will add it to the water, and see how it goes.

Thanks!
Vic

I'm sorry to hear your hen is not doing well.

When was the last time she laid an egg?
Any swelling/bloat or feeling of fluid in the abdomen?
What did you de-worm your flock with (name/dosage)?

If you have a vet that can perform a fecal float that would be a good idea.

At 18months - is she molting - is she losing feathers?
Weight loss can be from a number of things - worms and reproductive disorders are a couple of things that come to mind.
Separating her is a good idea. Check to see that her crop is emptying overnight and look for any external parasites like lice/mites. Hopefully she will perk up with the Corid.

Direct dosage of liquid Corid .2ml per 2.2 pounds - Corid is mild and fairly forgiving, so if your girl weight 2lbs, then .2ml once a day (can be split up into .1ml dosage 2x a day) would be fine in addition to having Corid water available during waking hours.

Corid dosage for Cocci is 1 1/2 teaspoons Corid powder per gallon or 2 teaspoons of 9.6% Corid liquid per gallon. Give for 5-7 days - make sure this is the ONLY water available during that time period. Mix a fresh batch at least once a day.
After you finish treatment offer some poultry vitamins and probiotics/plain yogurt..

Let us know how she is doing.

Last egg laid was well over a week ago, maybe two weeks. She is not molting . Wormer used was Worminator, two drops directly in throat per instructions. She has been dusted with d.e. in case of parasites .

She survived the night with help from a heat lamp. My daughter is checking on her now and had taken her some yogurt and treatcake. I dosed 6 drops Corid last night. I will repeat this tonight (0.2ml).
Thanks!

Just an FYI the probiotics (yogurt, etc.) will work best about a week after her last dosage of antibiotics. That way they don't get killed off by the meds too!

Just FYI Corid (Amprolium) that the OP is administering to her sick hen is a Coccidiostat and not an antibiotic. However, it is always best to offer probiotics/yogurt and vitamins once a treatment of any medication is finished. :)

SO I had to google it...I had thought coccidosis was a bacterial infection but its protozoal! Fascinating!

LOL I would be so lost without google! There is so much to learn and just not enough time!

Oh, doesn't Coccidiosis sound like a bacteria! Those protozoa are deadly if there's an overload, so not to be taken lightly.
