Sex- linked Information

As cute as that girl is we need a couple of better photos of that chicken. One a close-up of the head showing comb and wattles. Another one or two showing the body. Of interest are how thick the legs re, a good profile of the tail, a shot showing the chicken standing so we can see posture, and maybe saddle and hackle feathers.

At four months, sex should be pretty clear. Looking at the legs I think pullet but I just can't see the chicken well enough to be sure.

if it is a true red sex link that is a pullet, but there have been instances where things get mixed up at the feed store. Some employees are much better than others in understanding what is going on. It is always possible that you got a "red" chicken, not a true red sex link.

We bought some red sex link "Hens" from the local Tractor Supply back in February, but this hen is starting to look like a roo to me. We're new to owning chickens. What do you think? Shim isn't crowing like a rooster...but shim has a bigger comb and waddle than out other RSL hen.
Possible rooster?:

The other RSL for comparison:

Here is a picture of a couple of Red Sex-Link males with Red Sex-Link females. This was for an experiment I was doing. I agree, it would be better to see the chickens if they weren't being held to get a better look at what you have.

Hope these extra shots help. It's hard to get chicken pics around here without my rug rats in them. :)

I think you have a Road Island Red rooster, now that i cans see it from the side, it doesn't have sexlink coloring at all, the wattles and cone are way to developed to be pullet and its legs are thick, everything i see points to rooster, It also looks like na spur growing on the back of the foot, I think it would be safe to remove the toe nail polish, it is un manly on a rooster, lol

Is that Black in his tail? is he multiple colors of red and does he seem to be lit from within? He looks like a hatchery New Hampshire to me. Here are shots of mine he is about 3 years old,,,,,,

The fact that he is letting your kids love on him suggest NH not Rhode Island Red to me too. NH are docile. Like dogs with feathers.

On the happy news front this boy will help you make oodles of sex linked babies. Put him with anything Cuckoo, Barred, Silver, Crele etc and you will be able to tell the boys from the girls at hatch or within the first week.
