Sex- linked Information

Slate legs are sex linked . So yes if the rooster has slate or green legs the pullets will have them also and cockerels no . Green legs are a layer of slate skin and a layer of yellow skin . I just read your post again . The hens having green legs will make this unreliable .

Only for Silkies? Partridge Penedesencas have slate legs and they are not sex linked.

The last few comments are talking about the gene Id- Inhibitor of Dermal melanin. It restricts pigments in a specific layer of skin on the legs. It is sex linked.

Chickens have two main body skin pigmentation- white or yellow. It is not sex linked and white is dominant over yellow.

Yellow skin plus Id= yellow legs.

White skin plus Id= white legs.

Yellow skin and no Id= green legs.

White skin and no Id= slate legs.

The sex linked pairings using Id are:

Green or slate legged roosters over yellow or white legged hens.

Thanks!

I have see a lot of people get confused between sex linked(crossing breeds) with identifying gender.

Thanks . You are correct . I was going from memory . Checked the book . Sorry for misinforming everyone .

So, the female chicks will be gold with chipmunk-patterned down and males will be silver with chipmunk patterned down?

No not a strong chimpunk pattern. RIR have wheaten, which is dominant and wyandottes have eb(partridge) which is recessive. Most likely the chicks will have more RIR chick pattern- either no stripe or may have minimal striping.

Other than that, yes male chicks should be silver downed and females gold.

I just hatched out 5 "black sex link" chicks. Their dad was a Buff Orpington, and their mom was a cuckoo marans. But, 4 out of the 5 chicks are yellow and have a black dot on their head, and other one is black with a white dot on its head. Did I cross wrong? What happened?
