Sex- linked Information

Very interesting.

so rhe body color is a coincidence?

No coincidence . Gold (buff) and silver are sex linked so the females inherit gold from the rooster and the males get gold from the rooster and silver from the hen making them lighter in the face . So the barred hens must be based on silver under the black .

I'm trying to figure out how I could breed some sex-link chicks for next spring. I have a purebred Wheaten Ameracauna rooster and I'm wondering if there is a way to make red sex-link EEs with him? I have a variety of hens and I'm trying to figure out what would work. He would be group 1 I believe? So what type of hen for a red sex link would be best? And what type of coloration could we expect? I think I could also use him with a Barred Rock for black sex links too, right? Sorry for all the questions, thank you!

I think for red sex link the hen has to carry silver, right? So not sure on that but yeah, for black sex links that could work. Black is just basically any rooster and then the barred gene and I believe extended black gene (so you see the spot) for the hens and a barred rock would fit that and again, it's basically any rooster so that would work. :) but sorry I can't be of more help on the red sex links

I am not really up on Sex-Linking. I have tried some combinations and some have worked and others haven't. For my Red Sex-Links I breed my SC RIW females to a SC RIR male and get good results. I tried the same with my Rose Combs, RC RIW females and RC RIR male. It didn't work. I did get black chicks and white chicks but most of the chicks of both colors turned out to be females. Only one of the white chicks turned out to be male. I did give all of the chicks away except 2 of the white female chicks. They are Rose Comb. It is fun to experiment with whatever breeds you have to work with.

Some of my Single Comb Red Sex-Links. The female on the right is a cross of a Delaware female and RIR male. My BO female cross with my RIR male also looks like the one on the right.

This is my BO / RIR mix.

Any hen on the right side of that chart will work.

What hens do you have available?

I crossed a Barred Rock male with some red sex link hens. I got some females that were white with what I called "ghost barring". It was pretty neat looking.

To make black sexlinks, it's the hen that needs to be barred. The barred roosters can pass their barring gene to both male and female chicks, so the chicks would not be sexable by color. No sexlink (black or red) will breed true.

I’ll bet that red sex link hen did not have a black tail, possibly red but probably white. She had Dominant White which turns black feathers white. The black and barring would come from the BR male.

If you cross that Ghost barred hen with a not-barred red rooster you could get some interesting chicks. Any males will be barred, the females won’t be. If you hatch enough chicks you should get red barred males, black barred males, and white males that might or might not show ghost barring. The females will be the same without the barring but you might get some interesting patterns, especially in the red ones.

Since they are mixes there are no guarantees but there is a reasonable chance you could see the spot on the black male chicks. It’s possible but not as likely you could see the spot on the red chicks. With the white (yellow) chicks, you should not see the spot. One of the requirements for black sex links is that you can see the spot in the down. With mixes like these you just don’t get any guarantees on down pattern.
