Sex- linked Information

I had the barred rock male in with the RSL's and some BSL's. I just hatched out a bunch of chicks for practice. I processed the males who were mostly barred and traded the females to a guy with a pastured egg businesses. The girls ended up being good layers that handle themselves well in the pastures.

Would a Del Roo over a Rhodebar hen work for sexlinks?

have a small del flock, and a small rhodebarr flock, but our rhodie boy picked a fight with the del boy (got out of his pen to do so) and lost, (think he had a head injury) he didn't make it, leaving me with 5 rhodebar girls and my Del Roo and his girls.

trying now to decide if I should combine the 2 flocks, if the del x rhodebar would be autosexing, it would be much easier to justify it so we can put all the extra boys in the pot.

I would guess the chicks would look more like the Del.

Not for sex links. You have a double strike rooster--he's barred and silver. That rules out black and red sex links.

I'm not sure if auto sexing would work, with him having the barring gene. I don't know if the silver would interfere with being able to sex the chicks, making the head spot indistinguishable from the surrounding down.

That's what I thought too but thought maybe they had a class for it or something since I know nothing about showing so didn't wanna comment hah although perhaps they could be used in something like showmanship? I'm sure they meant actual shows but I'm pretty sure I've seen mutt dogs and rabbits, etc. For showmanship since that's just how to handle them and knowing parts and stuff. But for actual "shows" I do think you're right that it's only purebreds since that's usually the point. Plus sex links and other hybrids vary sooo much depending on parents, breeds used, hatchery or not, breeding goals, etc. Etc. So probably wouldn't really be fair or even possible to judge that. Although also, is showmanship just for juniors or.is there an adult version? Can't remember

There is no SOP for them since they are not a recognized breed so there is no criteria to judge them against.

But some states or at least counties have shows at the state or county fair which do include non-SOP birds. These are generally intended for 4H kids. Here in Arkansas the Extension Service will even provide birds, broilers, especially for this. I don’t know if this category is open to the public or restricted to 4H. I’ve seen the birds displayed at my county fair.

Does Massachusetts have anything like this where you would be eligible to participate? I don’t know. I suggest you contact your county extension office and ask them. Each state and sometimes even each county does things differently.

Sex Links are a hybrid. By definition they are not purebred and cannot be shown. They are beautiful birds, certainly, but they are strictly for production.

Since they are hybrids they would be disqualified.

Some fairs and poultry shows do in fact have a mixed breed show where poultry are simply evaluated at the judges discretion, not by a SoP...

Mixed breed showing events like this that are mostly geared towards children and 4H are becoming more popular at local fairs and events...

Here are some examples...
