Sex- linked Information

Pics
So glad I found this thread! We were experimenting on our own and just had a broody hatch out 3 Black Copper Marans roo over Cuckoo Marans hen crosses to test it out. So far they're a week old. Two hatched with big white spots and one hatched with a black head. They're feathering in with the expected barring & black feathers.

Here is a question: In our other coop we have a Buff Orpington rooster and a Barred Rock hen. It seems that should also produce sex links. Correct? Would color would those chicks be?

Thanks!

Buff Orp roo over a BR hen. In theory they will be black sex links and they will grow up black (hens) or black barred (roos). If you look in the very first post in this thread, there is a chart that shows what breeds can be crossed to make black sex links. You’ll find a Buff Orp roo and a Barred Rock hen on that chart, so it will work.

Buff can be a bit tricky. There are different ways to make buff genetically so you might not always get what theory says. Oh the male offspring will be barred and the females will not. That’s a given. But the adults may not be solid black. Somebody had some photos when they made that cross. Those photos may even be buried way back in this thread. I can’t remember for sure and I’m not going looking. Best I remember they did not have any trouble seeing the spot on the head of the chick, but some of the adults wound up with some buff splotches on them. Really striking birds. If you do that cross could you please post some photos on this thread? I’d like to see what you get.

Thank you! I did see on the chart that it would work, but I've never kept track of those eggs during those hatches to see exactly what hatched. It I ever try that cross I will certainly post what hatches. :)

Just want to verify I'm reading the charts right.

I have Cream Legbars, which are gold based, so I can put a silver based hen into my Cream Legbar pen to make red sex links.

I also have Black Copper Marans. I can put extra Cream Legbar hens (which are barred) into the BCM pen to make black sex link.

Thanks for double checking me!

Yes, you can cross CL roos over silver hens for a red/gold sexlink. I've been crossing CL roo over Delaware Hen and getting lovely little sex links. (Given that they are a combinations of Delawares and a English bird, I've been calling them "North Atlantic Stars"). The females are pretty light, but by the time the down dries it is pretty clear which are which. Also the females in that particular cross tend to have one or more dark spots on their heads, but that is less reliable than the gold.

And Yes it should work to put a BCM roo over CL hens to make black sexlinks. I guess they would be olive eggers, Is that why you are thinking of that?

The main reason I cross the CL roo with the Delaware is I only had one CL hen (although now I have some pullets reaching maturity).

I've been crossing a Black Australorp roo over a Cuckoo Marans hen for black sex links. The head spots can, at times, be hard to tell due to the white/yellow down on the side of the head.

ANYWAY, I have a bird that is pretty fully feathered out and shows no barring/cuckoo on its back or wings, but is showing something like mottle on its breast. That is, the very tips of the feathers are white.

Given the lack of baring/cuckoo on the back and wings, is it safe to assuming the white on the breast is some kind of leakage (like the red breasts on RIRxBR black stars), and that this is a female? Or do I need to wait for secondary sex characteristics to be sure?

ANYONE?

The feathers are a dark black like an Australorp, except for the very tip edges of some on the breast. To me it doesn't seem barred or cuckoo at all.

I've stopped crossing over the Cuckoo Marans, now that my Barred Rock Girls have started laying, but I am still trying to sort this one out.

I would think that it is just some leakage, but don't really know. I would also think that the cuckoo would work just like normal barring.

Yes the purpose of BCM roo over CL hens is to make sex-linked olive eggers.

We love all the colors we get in eggs every day!
