UPDATE - Rusty is the first of my 7 Pullets to lay - and she has laid for 3 days in a row, about every 24 hours! She has had bright red Comb and Wattles since week 8, and a loud and proud Egg Song! for the past month, without laying til this weekend, and usually performed from Perches in the play yard - as if she was a Roo. She's also the one to chase off a squirrel if needed, and will actually BARK like a dog at some machines or startle events. She got 2 others barking also today after they got their first Laying Hen food and crushed eggshell snack. She's giving the extra snacks and attention for being the one to teach the others how to lay in the Henhouse. Moral of the story...NEVER give up on a possible Cockerel too soon...esp a RIR! https://www.facebook.com/778573775/videos/pcb.10160210424003776/10160210421908776/

Awesome!

The 2 RiRs have been daily layers for over a week now ~ and no crowing from anyone thru week 21. Rusty's downturned tail feathers and longer saddle feathers either just disappeared, got pulled, or maybe she grew into them...idk but she's a wonderful Pullet - with dazzling comb and wattle color. She practiced an egg song for a couple weeks before laying, but after her first couple eggs has made no fuss or noise. I'm usually near, with a song or soft voice so no need to get noisy for her. She has started chatting and honking and doing other vocalizations lately tho. Sometimes she will stand by quietly for awhile while one of the other girls is in the next box. She's alert and usually was the one to chase off a squirrel. I think now they've figured out that neighboring songbirds and squirrels sometimes drop seed and nuts from the fence top.

Harriet, a sweet Barred Rock laid after spending hours tweaking a nest near where the others lay, so least 5 of our 7 are laying, even in chilly weather. I took a video of that - she was so cute and focused on getting it done. They get a fairly consistent 12 hours of light a day...and they have all started I'm considering reducing that slightly to see if they keep up once started without the additional stimulation. We began the light at 50 Watt, then 40 watt...may reduce to 25 Watt, then 15 min to 30 mins less a day. So happy to cook with my own flock's eggs!

image ending in 619 is a rooster and both the Red birds in the video are Production Reds not R.I. Reds.
