What about the size alone? I wouldn't think a pea comb would stick up that high especially from the distance the pictures were taken.

Agrees, that's a lot of comb for a young female.

Kind of... She sent me a picture of the mother hen, and she barely has a comb at all. In fact I thought she was one of the chicks at first:

If it seems like a good deal, from someone you trust, with good birds that you want in your program...go get 'em. Most good deals include 'extra' males.

Just to update, I decided to wait a few weeks on getting these chicks. I have a feeling most of them are cockerels. She's going to go ahead and list them, unsexed, and if they are still available in a few weeks when they can be sexed great, if not, she said she is setting more eggs next week and will let me know when those are ready to go.

if they're all black breasted reds, then all of the females will look like that mother, and the males will be very vibrant red and black.

Good to know, thank you! Yes, the mother is bbr, but the 2 roosters she keeps with the hens are both black.
