I have 8 barred rocks that are about 8 weeks old. I am nervous that several of them might be male. I cannot put my finger on what exactly seems male about them, perhaps their slight scary Velociraptor look… Some seem to have a more upright posture, and they are fighting a bit. Their fighting includes puffed feathers and bumping chests. Is that a chicken behavior?

At 8 weeks are there any characteristics I can look for to sex these chickens?

Thanks so much in advance for your expertise.

Males will be lighter in color with more comb than females. Post pics and we can tell you right away who is a boy.

Your females will fight and chest bump at this age to establish pecking order.

Boy's will look like this (about 8 weeks old):

Girls will be more black with white edging, like this (1 1/2 year old hen):

Thank you! I think they must be girls. None have a comb or wattle that developed and their coloring is more black than white. I was hoping it was too early for pecking order to start.

That is a very handsome boy, though.
