sexing and decisions

I've ordered from both McMurray and Ideal and have had great success with both. Ideal has cheaper shipping, so I'll probably go with them for most of my orders from now on, though.

Townline is in Michigan.

Here's a resource, I hope, that will help.

Gotta say that I've never purchased chicks from anywhere but the feedstore. Nearly went off to a hatchery that is about 100 miles away this year. Then I got to thinking what that drive would add to the price of 10 chicks. I'm pretty sure that it was the supplier for the feedstore anyway.

I did get 35 quail thru the mail once - they all survived the trip! I can no longer remember where they came from

My last order of 25 pullets + free rare & exotic came with 25 pullets, 1 cockerel. They're really pretty good at sexing, and one roo is much easier to deal with than 8 out of 9!

In my order of 25 chicks, I order two roosters got FIVE. It says right on the hatchery's website, the guarantee is for 90% accuracy.

You're right, they do guarantee 90% accuracy. But my experience ordering from McMurray has been better than 90%, both times. And 5 out of 25 chicks is still better odds than the OP's 8 out of 9...

Yes, you're right; which is why I didn't request a refund from the hatchery for the extra roos . Personally I wouldn't buy chicks from a feed store or TSC and the like. Most of the feed store employees I've seen don't know a thing about keeping chicks, so the chicks in the store aren't cared for properly. The chicks are stressed out from the shipping and then more stressed from the lack of care at the store. Plus our local store keeps all the chicks, seperated by breed, sex, etc., all in open bins. What's to keep a customer from picking up a chick that's in a bin marked 'straight run' from accidently putting them back down into a bin marked 'pullets', thus messing up the whole system.

AFAIK, hatcheries' "guarantees" of 90% or 95% accuracy at sexing does not mean they are saying there is no chance you'll get a higher proportion of males -- only that you can get a refund *if* there's a higher proportion.

No?

Pain in the butt either way, of course

You're are right Pat. I couldn't ask for the refund, but it was a pain to have to find homes for the extra roos. I'm addressing the issue of people saying "order only pullets so you won't have that problem". The problem still exists.
