Hi all! I have 4 australorp chicks, 1 splash and one blue about 2 weeks old and 2 blues about a week old and was wondering if they could be sexed by their tail feathers at this age?

The 2 older ones have only now just started getting some tail feathers and one 1 week old blue already has some too so was wondering if that could be a way to sex as 1 chick got tail feathers at 1 week old and the other 2 have only got theirs at 2 weeks? The younger ones tail is also pointed more

Sorry if that's a mess, I just woke up :hmm

Pics would be super helpful. Also Two weeks is a wee bit too young to tell. Usually one can tell at 6-8 weeks old.

Yes that's exactly my thoughts, I just find it weird how one chick got them earlier than the rest

That chick is also darker, either dark blue or black, I'm not sure really. I will post pics now, just had to take them

This is the 2 week old ones 20210613_095444.jpg 20210613_095507.jpg

This is the week old darker one with longer pointed tail, just noticed the wing feathers are much longer too!!

And this is the week old one with no tail, like the other 2 week old ones looked like at a week old

You can’t sex Australorps by their tail feathers. Repost at 7 weeks old.
Yes didn't think so with tail feathers alone, but did read somewhere about one sex feathering up faster than the other sex? By 7 weeks old I will be sure of their sex so don't think I'll need to post! Though if I have trouble I will definitely do so! :)

Keep us posted, with a 7 week fallow up of age. Would be curious if you did see the same results for the longer feather tails versus the shortest.

The 2 older ones which both feathered slowly are now 5 weeks and have very distinct red combs so I'm guessing cockerels

The other 2 are still too young to tell, so I'll let you now as they get older.
The faster feathering one still has a different more scruffy tail

I will post some photos later today

Here are the photos
They are in my bathroom overnight as the temperatures drop below 23F or -5C

This is the older splash australorp:

This is the older blue australorp:

This is the younger blue australorp:

And this is the younger blue australorp who also feathered first and has a longer different tail:

You can tell the tail is more scruffy and longer than the others, was harder talking a photo of this one
