Sexing Barred Rocks

Geez, this post kind of scares me too! By 3 weeks I knew one of my barred rocks was a rooster because his barring was very bold and defined, and he had a bigger and brighter comb. Just yesterday I noticed one of my other barred rocks has red to its comb whereas the other doesn't. I guess time will tell, but I hate all these surprises!

Where did you get them from? I have been noticing when i go to tsc to look at chicks most of the barred rocks in the bins have been looking like boys to me. I ordered mine from a hatchery as sexed pullets and they all look like your chick num 1.

I read where someone said they watched a documentary on hatcheries and some take the chicks that are hard to sex and put those in the straight run bins and so alot end up bein boys because of that.

I read an article a while back about barring. the article was written by the owner of one of the largest hackle farms in the country. His birds set the standard that others try to duplicate.

To get to the point quickly he wrote that the barring in males will be 50/50 white and black.
The hens will be 75% black and 25% white

Based on this it appears from the pictures that you have 2 pullets and 4 cockerels.

I have hatched a lot of barred birds and find that there may be some confusion with very young birds but once they feather in this method is almost always right.
