Sexing Barred Rocks

Oh no...I have two 4 week old barred rocks and i'm just sure one of them is a roo, of course it's my favorite one and we can't have them where i live....i'm devastated

we have 5-6 week old BR's too and one turned out to be a cockerel. His comb starting coming in red at 3-4 weeks and now he is developing tiny spurs on back of his legs. He was the only one in the bunch of 6 that had a solid white spot on his head and his feathers came in twice as fast and with beautiful high contrast barring compared to my pullets. he has black shading on his legs though and is pretty quiet. ( thought flighty and getting bossy toward my girls) red coming in under/around mouth now. I'd say keep feeling for spurs, they were my sure fire indicator.

Cute birds. I wanted barred rocks last year when I started. But waited til this year, because there weren't any birds available when I got my flock last year.

So, I went to TSC, picked all the light birds, as that is what I THOUGHT I remembered were the girls. Well, I was accurate, they were all the Same, just BOYS! So, I went back, got 4 more that we're darker with dark legs, and got 3/4 girls. Also added RIR Pullets and 2 white leghorn. Anyway, I am new and although I thought I had it figured out, I didn't, so chalk it up to experience. Nice birds, thanks for sharing!

I'm not trying to doubt the pros, I just see lots of pics of hens with bright red combs...

It seems in photos, the females have bigger combs then some of the other hen breeds...so maybe we should wait and see who lays eggs and who doesn't?

I have a couple of five week-old Barred Rocks and today let them on the grass for the first time. They were excited and I heard a "chirp-a-chirp-a-chirp!" in the exact cadence of a cockledoodledooo. Oy. "She" also has a waddle and pink comb all of a sudden. Back to the breeder. Sigh. Our town prohibits roosters and I refuse to eat my little Cacciatore.

very true about pullets cock a doodle doo ing Just a week or 2 ago I swear my 10 week old EE pullet did it then I heard nothing for days then one more time a sorta cock a doodle doo now she is bagawking I think she was going through a voice change She went from sounding like a baby seagull then to a dog squeaky toy then the weird sorta girly crowing sound now to her big girl voice.
