Sexing Barred Rocks

Do you find that barred Roo's are more vocal than pullets?

My barred roo is rather quiet when he isn't being bullied. I don't have any hens to compare too, but my polish hens are chatty. Only time my barred roo makes any noise is when one of the larger Roo's are picking on him, which is often, unforuntatly. May have to,find him a mother home where he is the only roo. he is such a sweet though

I wanted to share an observation and ask a question, and I don't feel like it's worth starting new thread to do.

You can see my flock in my signature; three of our birds are barred rocks. In observing our barred rocks, they seem to be the most fearlessly impulsive birds we have. It's an endearing fearlessly impulsive though; usually funny or cute. They seem to lack any critical thinking skills whatsoever. Those birds are also 2 weeks younger than our next youngest birds (the barred rocks are 6 weeks old).

Is the barred rock normally an impulsive creature compared to orps and wyandottes? Do y

I have 6 barred Rocks, 16 weeks; 2 Australorps, 14 weeks; 1 Jersey Giant, 14 weeks; and 3 Easter Eggers, 14 weeks. My Barred Rocks are the most curious. They are always getting into something. The easiest way to get them back into the run is to pretend to be doing something in there. They come running to see what's going on. They want to know what's over here or over there. They know where all the best places to find bugs are. The other chickens are still trying to figure out where those Barred Rocks keep finding goodies.

Seems like my BR's might be pretty standard. I feel like I could throw a chunk of bread under a running law mower and they'd run in there to grab it. I won't do anything like that because it's usually pretty funny to watch them--they just seen to use much less mental prowess than the rest of my birds. Hopefully it serves them well over thine

I had one barred rock in a mixed hatchery flock. Spot was very curious and completely human friendly, very chatty, and unafraid of anything I brought in for the flock. Although a very aggressive Leghorn seemed to be the dominant hen, the barred rock was top dog, she was just never aggressive about it. A simple look or movement, and all would cede ground or treats to Spot. I only saw her peck another a few times. No one ever pecked her. So I have to give her high marks for chicken social skills, but can see how her curiosity and confidence might have led her into trouble. She did know enough to steer clear of the lawnmower, but ignored the dangers of the shovel to search for worms. It was impossible to dig or turn beds with her around. Hard to make broad generalizations from a sample size of one, I know, but she was a memorable hen and family favorite.
