sexing by vents? how to?

im blushing at being so stupid, but i thought a 'vent" was somewhere around the nose area. or do they have a nose? haha near the breathing area..

I have found the absolute best way to sex chickens.

Take a picture, post in in "What Breed or Gender is This". Wait for Speckled Hen to answer.
99.99% accurate.

Thats the way I plan to anyway.

Seriously, I am totally lost when it comesto this. I just can seem to see the differences.

Oh, puleeeze! I'm wrong just as much as I am right. Barred Rocks are much easier than most, one of my main breeds I keep. It's just an art and after a few years of observation and owning boys and girls of several breeds, you just learn to see the signs. I've learned to look quite often at the thickness of the legs more than the combs on many breeds, although that doesn't work on some as much as others. For instance, the Ameraucanas don't have thick legs in either sex and the Orpingtons have tree-trunk legs in both.

Jdypat, that word "vent" sure is an odd one for the place where both poop and eggs come out, isn't it? Vent, ventilation, air, nose, I see where your mind went. Perfectly logical. Heck, they even call the nostrils on birds "nares".

Well, you could always buy this book and try teaching yourself. I remember reading that some vent sexers started with looking at vents of obvious cockerels & pullets and worked their way down to chicks. Of course they were being trained by experts the whole time, but I'm sure a person with determination, lots of practice and a very embarrassed flock

can become good at vent sexing.

I used to work in a hatchery many years ago and i sexed chickes. I found it very easy once i got the hang of it. I'd also like to say that when i worked there we were very careful with the chicks please don't think bad of me b/c of what you see and here about hatcheries now days.. Girls were flat and boys had 2 tiny bumbs. I have never done it to my own chicks but i have thought about it. You would need a very bright light and know how to exactly hold them so you do not hurt them. I could go into detail but i think its best not to b/c i don't want someone to try and end up hurting the chicks.
