sexing chicks (I know been done)

Ok so the chicks that hatched yesterday I can check now or would I be better off leaving them under mama as she’s pretty protective
Unless this chick has resulted from the very specific crossing mentioned above, checking the wings will tell you nothing other than that you have a 50/50 shot of being right in guessing what gender the chick is. There is a science behind the genetics that has to be in place for it to be applied

So feathering my chick won’t work and I’m gonna have 50/50 chance of either gender
I’ll wait till adult hood either lay or start calling

Any help greatly appreciated
Here I have two chicks 5 weeks old and doing really well both came from lavender orps

View attachment 1695925 View attachment 1695926This one ^^^ I’m thinking male due to comb and wattle View attachment 1695927 And this one female due to small ridge no wattle

Am I correct in thinking this or can females have a naturally large wattle anyway
Yes, first bird is a cockerel.....a pullet eont develop that color at this age. On second bird, likely pullet but would like to see more pics

I stopped in Rural King this evening and a older gentleman late 70's was watching People check the wings of Chicks, He said I'm going to show you all another way . He got a chicken picked it up and said if it's legs go straight and still is a Pullet , He got it by the back of the neck and it's legs went Straight .

Yet another old wives tale with zero scientific reasoning....and a good way for someone to unintentionally injure a chick

I see feathered feet. Orpington don't have feathered feet. I think You have Pekins or Cochins depending on what they are called where you are.
;)
