sexing day old chicks

This really has my interest. I have heard of things like this before, and just assumed they didn't work based on what other BYC members said. But now I am really thinking of trying this. Wouldn't it be something if it actually worked? I am subscribing to this thread for sure.
Thanks for starting this interesting topic, pokey.

It's crazy, but I'd really like to get a lot of people trying it and the results they get. I almost laughed in the clerks face at tsc, but I had to go back and tell him it worked. If you try it please post your results.

I definitaly will. I just set up a homemade incubator and will be hatching sometime soon. I will most definitaly post my results. I dont blame you about almost laughing at the clerk. I wouldn't have believed it myself either. What about harming the chick though? I mean, by holding it by its head it would hurt them, no? I certainly don't want to hurt my chick.

I don't doubt that it works, I just can't see myself hanging my chick in the air by his head.

It doesn't seem to hurt them in any way. Just use three fingers and gently raise them up. They usually will kick or dangle right away.

Okay, I am totally for trying this. I mean why not. If you are gentle I am sure the chick will be fine. I mean I am sure you are not suppose to hold it up in the air forever. The only problem I have is in this same thread some people have said the roos kick and some say the hens kick. So I am not sure which way to do it.

No it just takes a second or two, and I only know what the clerk told me about what sex does what..... But whatever works for you please post it! Like I said , I doubt it's more than a wives tale, but maybe more.........

This seems interesting I am also subscribeing to this post and have eggs due in a few weeks and will try this. Im sure it prob wont hurt them if u r gentle and your not slinging or whipping them around by the head and u keep your hands pretty steady. Yeah if u feel like u r not stable or might have a crazy fit while doing it then I wouldnt recomend it but otherwise I dont really see any harm in it.
