sexing day old chicks

I always sex mine with an old method. - If you turn your chick gently upside down and part the fluff on their vent - Roo boys have a tiny little mole like a wee little spot but the pullets don't. You can usually see the difference at a day old. I am pretty sure they use this method in factory farming. You have to really look quite hard. I learned this method after I took my chicks to the vet who promptly turned one over to see if it had a w1lly????

I realised there had to be a better way!!!!!!!

Oesdog - Whatever method workd for you I guess - mostly chicken sexing is a Guess!!!!

While this may or may not work, I'm wondering what you do with the results if you are hatching your own? Are you selling the roosters as straight run (which seems a little unfair)?
I always want to know the sex of the chicks, just because I am impatient, but in the end, it really doesn't matter. The roosters get grown out for the freezer, and I keep the hens. I guess for me, I wouldn't want to risk hurting the chick, since I'm not culling anyone as chicks, and wouldn't want to give any away without being sure.

As for the feed store, this might be helpful if it works, but usually the store employees do the handling, and they may object to lifting them by their heads.

I always wait until my chicks are older and you can definetly tell who is what. I am not saying this is proven fact, that's why I wanted posted results. I don't sell chicks that often, most of mine are older birds and I Have someone that picks up extra Roos to process them.if you don't feel comfortable doing it please don't. But if you google some videos on how chicks are sexed at hatcheries you will find they are handled much much harder.but if you want to try join in.

Interesting to find this thread... I bought 3 chicks from pokey back in December and she DID mention both of the boys being boys! I'm glad one is a girl, though - can't wait for the little blue eggs. The other two are going to freezer camp (kitties say THANK YOU) - they already fight all the time at just 2 months old!!!

I was told the method works and a chicks body weight is hardly enough to hurt their neck. I do not do it because I have a market for roos that are at the age I can tell by the combs.

Ever watch how they are handled and dropped in a large hatchery? They pick them up in gobs.

Still waiting for someone to do the test on chicks with KNOWN sex, such as sex links and posting the true results. I'm betting the farm that it is not accurate, sorry. Just think about it--you have a 50/50 chance of being right, even if you just flip a coin.
