Sexing Geese, does this really work?

Well what did the goslings (and adults) look like? Do you think they really are pure Cotton Patch on not? Like I posted above it would be hard to go wrong at that price.

I have looked at some pics and they look like them to me, but I am by no means a goose expert!! It would be great if they were

DG will you look at my other post about the ratio of male/female geese.

There only about 4 kinds of domestic geese that are dimophistic. The Pilgrims are the most common ( and IMO are a great breed to own.) OLD ENGLISH tend to be slightly larger and more rare. Finally there are the Shetland geese that tend to be fairly small. It is great to know when they hatch just what sex ratio you have and it is also handy to know at a glance that the bird sneaking up on your backside is a goose and not a gander! Good luck to you!

There are VERY few actual Cotton Patch geese around. The only flock I currently trust is Dr Tom Walker's who really knows his stuff. Unfortunately, even he doesn't have a set in stone standardization for what a Cotton Patch should look like (two lobes? one lobe? none at all?).

He is working on the saddleback version of the Cotton Patch and the solid strain. These should be very small, streamlined geese that DO NOT have orange bills. Orange bills are Pilgrims, pink bills are Cotton Patch.

Also, the leg thing is nonsense. Genuine nonsense

. Cotton Patch goslings can kinda-sorta be sexed as day olds if you're extremely familiar with the breed, and by a couple weeks of age the difference in color makes it apparent who's going to be what.

If these are Cotton Patch then snatch them up. Odds are they're not. If they are large geese then they're probably Pomeranians and/or crosses.

When I get the time I'll try to post up some pictures of my goslings.

OK! I tried it tonight, 2 goslings at 5+ wks.old one held it's legs straight out (boy?) and one held one leg out and one leg tucked close, (I can't begin to know what that is supposed to mean

) the 2nd pair, 2+ wks.old same results, so now I am at square one and will have to wait and see what it all means..Doesn't matter anyway, I so LOVE my geese

they follow me around, greet me each time I come out.. Just to cool

I had doubt about the leg sexing part.

As for the cotton patch breed, I really doubt they are but all the geese she had were really healthy looking and very pretty so I think i'm going to get them anyway. I will keep you updated.

This is interesting because I got a pair of goslings today from the feed store. Was told the male had a leg band on the right leg, the female on the left leg. I doubted this because if it was the cause the female is bigger with bigger legs. I figured it didn't matter as long as I got one of each.

I just tried this sexing method and the supposedly boy did in fact keep both legs out straight and the supposedly female had one leg straight and one leg bent. Interesting!

You should know that Cotton Patch geese Are sex-linked Or if you like scientific words they show sexual dimorphism. The Ganders are white and the geese are dove-gray. If they are true cotton patch there would be no need for this "leg test" as the goslings are yellow (male) or dark (females) The female goslings have a pink and gray bi-colored Bill while Pilgrims female goslings is usually solid gray (Pilgrims are the more common dimorphic breed). If you have your heart set on true cotton patch breed proceed with caution! on the other hand $10 is a reasonable price for just about any gosling.

X2 - Cotton patch come in two colors, Solid and Saddleback. The males of both color are white, sometimes with some grey, and the female Solids are mostly solid brown, and the female Saddlebacks are white with a brown "saddleback" pattern. They are a great little goose! Mine have never hissed at me or chased me - Although 10$ apiece seems low for pure Cotton Patch.
