Little Roughian,Open their wings and pay close attention to the barring on the feathers.Pay no attention to the flight feathers, only the coverts-shoulder feathers. Look at post#48 and then at the top pic in post #49. Notice in pic #48 the long feather in the middle has now lost all barring on the top half of the feather and the bottom half (left of the cuticle-midrib) does not have the distinct barring anymore and is changing too.The top half of this feather is now changing to very dark brown while the bottom half is slowing changing to the same color. You can see the pigment blocks on the lower half of her wing feather that are gaining size and are the exact same color as the upper half already is. There was a long,,long discussion about feathers not changing color earlier here, and this is yet another fine example proving my point, that feathers DO NOT COME in all one color, but slowly change color overtime.,That wing feather clearly again shows color progression and at present is 2-3 diffrent colors-shades of brown. Top pic in Post #49 still shows a barring pattern thru each feather almost appearing as a continous line from feather to feather.I hope this helps,,and as I mentioned before in other posts some people do not have numerous same color-patterns of chicks that hatches together to notice these subtle changes.I look at pigment at the root of the cuticle feathers now more on some colors to gain an early sex id,,make notes, then keep track.I hope these pics helps. These chicks hatched in mid July,,so close to 7 weeks old now and I could tell a diffrence over a week ago between them.I don't really pay too much attention to IB chicks,,4 of my colors are B/S and they are the tougest to sex because they are all born yellow so thats where I have been concentrating early sexing skills-notes-techniques the most this year.
