What is the best way to tell if Rhode Island Red chicks are hens and Roos. Just bought some straight run and I tryed to pick out the ones with a pattern hoping they were hens.
Usually the roos start to get their combs in pretty early where as the pullets combs will stay small and pale. The roos feathers will be longer and pointier and many times the pullets will feather in first. But I would go ahead and follow the advice of Drumstick Diva and post this question in the What Gender section here of BYC... https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this Good luck with your new babies and enjoy BYC!
There is no way to accurately sex chicks. But once they are older and have their adult feathers, here are some sexing tips: Look at the saddle feathers. They are curved/rounded on hens and pointy on the roosters. Here is a picture to help ya out: (again only works when they have adult feathers) Good luck!
