I have 4 pure buff wheaten Amerucana chicks. Two have extremely puffy cheeks and two have less pronounced cheeks. They ones that have less cheek fluff seem to act like/stand like lil baby cockerels.

I’m wondering if that is something established that male chicks will have different puffs?

I believe wheaten is one of the few colors that can be sexed by color when they start to feather out. Post photos of the individual birds when they have some feathers. Cheek puff will not help. 😊

Is this guy considered a buff wheaten? I believe he is split to lavender he has two lavender tail feathers. The people that had him before hatched a lot of his eggs and got buff splash and lavender chicks from him.

Are you sure he's pure Ameraucana? He seems to have green legs (could be the lighting) which would means he's an Easter Egger. He looks to be a mixed variety as well *maybe* he's a Splash Wheaten but I wouldn't expect all that color on his chest... His pea comb also looks modified to me and he seems to be lacking a beard

I also wanted to add that buff wheaten is not a recognized color, buff is and so is wheaten but there is no combination variety and doesn't seem to be any project colors either... I wonder if you were sold Easter Eggers and told they were a new made up variety 😕
The breeder never gave me a color name actually he had lavender buff and splash hens . all the roosters from him look the same. He’s got a muff and beard it’s just whiskers now since he is an old man. All the hens from him lay blue eggs and come in standard color. His legs are definitely a blue slate color in person. Even tho some of his chicks have less pronounced muffs they definitely have them.

I have found some roosters matching him on the Amerucana breeders site from projects but they are very old threads.

I don’t really care either way. I thought since he fit the definition and breeds true then he wouldn’t be an Easter egger since those do not breed true? So confusing! So much to learn!

attached pictures of his offspring.
