We love our Red stars! They started laying in August of 2010....layed great all this winter. Can we expect them to lay through another winter or will we need replacements this year?

I got my BSL! Yay they are so cute! I ordered 10 and they gave me 11.

So I think I want to replace my egg layers with Sex-Links, however I want to be able to breed them and continue working on the future generations. If I get sex-links and breed them together they will be very varied right? Will the babies lay as well as the adults? What would I do if I just want REALLY good brown egg layers?

ETA: If you crossed a Delaware with a RIR will the babies be superior at laying eggs? I don't see how...?

Breeding sex links will produce a mottled affair. Since they have two distinctively different parents mated to "nick" a great laying hybrid, they will produce good, solid layers, but the coloring will forever be rather blotching and inconsistent, shall we say.

90% of the hatchery chicks are "mutts". Let's fact it. They are no longer true to standards or type. Many have polluted gene pools. They are called RIR, but they are far from the heritage bird. But, they will breed true, that is, they will make more of themselves. This might be the way you wish to go if breeding for consistent look is something you want. Production Reds would likely come the closet to the Sex-Link hybrids in production while maintaining a consistent breed look.
