I had some old lace curtain panels. I sewed some together, cut others to fit... Attached them at coop, running to fence, used little plastic rings with nails, like you use for hanging plastic sheeting. Also, I attached them at the corners of the fence, just about anywhere I could find surfaces to attach them to. It was free...

Another thing that can be used - fitted sheet bottoms.

I had a friend who was very thrifty. He would take fitted crib sheets and twin sized to shade his garden. They are light so you only need some easy to shove in the ground rods (like those plastic ones). I was amazed how well they shaded small areas.

You could move them as needed. His sister had just finished having babies so she passed them on to him.

As said earlier, you use what you have to use!

We bought some shade cloth to add some to one coop and another has an old fitted mattress pad for shade. Both do the job well.

We are redesigning what was a dog run (our dogs live in the house, but for nice days we had a big run for them...this was before we learned how overrun this property is with ticks), and it had shade cloth over the top of one end. But the more we read about turkeys needing to keep cool, the more concerned Alex got. So now he's just gone whole hog and has put in 14-foot (16-foot, but sunk 2 feet in the ground) 4x4s and will build a sloped roof of corrugated sheet metal over one end of the turkey yard.

I hope we're doing the right thing. We're not building an "airtight" coop at all for the turkeys, because we see how hot our chickens are--we can't even shut their coop up at night, have to leave the doors and windows open. The next chicken coop will have LOTS of ventilation!

I use tarps. Dh says the place is looking a little to "Sanford and Son" But at least my flock has shade!!!

Try shade cloth. It comes in different colors and different percentages of filtering. Its sold in packages but I know you can buy it per foot at HD or lowes. If you put gromets in it, you can make it removable to take off in the winter if you want,.

You can also grow some vines along the outside. Morning glories or beans/peas would work well. Both should naturally regrow the next season if you let their seeds fall on the ground. If you don't want to dig or the soil is bad, put a long planter along the side of the run. For more year round coverage grape vines or rose vines would work, but their root systems would need more than a planter.

to shade their run, go get some latice, it works great. or take a old blanket and set it on top of there house. Also outdoor screen on a roll works good too, and landscaping screen. But i would try the latice i did today and it gives them more shade when they are in their coop as if i didnt put it on.

My runs have heavy chain link roofs eight feet wide and I threw some recycled (scrap) sheets of painted plywood up there and wired them down to the chain link. They ahve been there five years already and look the same as when I put them up there. They were discards from someone redoing their carport, so they were already old and used. They are not watertight, don't even fully touch, plus we drilled holes where the wires go through, but hey, it's free and it works, for now.
