Well, after a weekend of socializing I must confess to being somewhat fazed.
They've all gone home now and the next lot arrive on Thursday.

The capricious weather isn't helping. The run is awful. The tarpaulin is doing what I paid for and keeping the water out and according to an old friend who came down to the chickens with me, isn't going anywhere.
I can't adequately describe what a long term disaster sweeping the bedding and shite on to the floor and leaving it has been. Earth will turn to mud but it drains well compared to the layers of bedding. The chickens are using the roost bar in the day to get their feet out of the mud in bath coops. I think I'll make some portable roost bars or find some stumps.

I am surprised it doesn’t rot down to a good compost. It suggests to me the location has a drainage problem.
I just chuck everything on the floor including shredded paper bedding.
Does it smell Shad? That is usually a good sign of a problem.

Oh no....😕that probably explains the persistent scaly leg mites in the allotment crew.
I guess you can either :
-add material that has a better drainage (shavings may help and is lighter than gravel)
- take the chickens off the floor temporarily in rainy season (roosts or pallets)
-create a slope to help with drainage
- or on the opposite, create a slope and put some completely impermeable material like a lino on the ground.

@Shadrach I have a question regarding the use of Metacam. I began giving some to one of my hen who I'm pretty sure has EYP, but she's not on the verge of dying yet though she looks in pain. Do you think it's better to give her for four or five days, stop, and start again when she looks to be in pain again or should I just give it to her until the end ?

The "end" could be many months away. Gloria my vet in Catalonia told me five days of Metacam but this was for injuries.
