Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

If anyone is looking for a good chicken tree, I recommend the Parrotia Persica, or Persian ironwood. I posted a photo from the inside recently, with the chickens enjoying its horizontal branches, and at this time of year its colour on the outside is a joy (here poking out from under and behind a pittisporum and a myrtle.

Ooh. That is lovely.
Could you link or repost the picture from inside? Also, do you know which cultivar you have?
I am excited because I am mid reaearch for my next batch of planting around the Chicken Palace and it is hardy for my zone.
I usually stick to natives but make exceptions particularly as the temperature warms and some natives will not do so well.

sure thing; this shows the structure inside quite well (also showing the chickens leaving, disgruntled by my intrusion  )

Thanks - it is perfect!
I think you have either Horizontalis or Pendula. Probably Horizontalis. I am going tree hunting! Love the Fall color.

What year are all of your supermarkets switching over to 100% free range eggs?
I haven't heard anything on the free range here as yet even the free-range chickens have been taken out of our local supermarket. I'm trying to organise something at our nearest market because of this

We were told even the animals protection is at risk because of our last PM coming in for a few days. I don't know anything more on that.

I noticed that that there were resques being arranged for dogs in research labs in America, again nothing is mentioned here...

We are supposed too be an animal loving nation, it's a shame the people don't have more power over such important matters and a majority of our nation had not made aware of the suffering that is caused 😢

Look like you have some molters, how are they handling it ?
Okay. A few stand around looking sick. I think it's a pretty unpleasant experience for chickens. A couple are laying and moulting. I think overall this autumn has so far been warmer than last and this autuman and winter they have the new coop extension to shelter in. They use it a lot. The old coop due to having only mesh in the run part didn't provide much in the way of shelter from the wind and wind driven rain. Under the old coop, while dry and out of the wind mostly, didn't give much room.

A lovely patch of chicken cover.

The Expectant.:D
Their expectaions were fullfilled by an unexpected Bucket Boy offering of cottage cheese and chopped brussel sprouts.

It stayed dry and sunny and the ground is slowly drying out.

  1. Great treat!
  2. We had much sunshine here too. But the temp dropped quite a lot. I think it froze last night.
  3. Poor stubborn Henry.
And a good evening to you all.

Nerfed the camera again. One of the selector dials moves when it's in my pocket. As Manue's thread shows, chickens look a lot better in Mediterranean light. It's something I miss and it's very noticable. Failing a move, a camera better suited to low light and colour sensitivity might do the trick for pictures.

The rains back. Not with a vengance, more akin to the last drops from a shower head.

Everybody came out and stayed out except at one point when it rained properly for a few minutes. The caked mud is coming off the legs and when I opened them up most were reasonably dry.

When I looked in on him to say goodnight this evening he had his head tucked under his wing and was sleeping. Last winter when he and the hens were sleeping in the old coop it was hard to work out how he slept with various hens trying to wedge themselves underneath him.
