Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I actually got locked out of my A.mazon account in 2020 due to the fact that I changed my phone number. When I was in the process of acquiring a new #, updating my info with A.mazon wasn't foremost on my mind. When I got around to logging in and was denied access, their customer service wanted a driver's license with photo and date of birth to verify identity. Since I wasn't willing to disclose that info, I now use relatives' accounts to order incognito as needed, seldomly.
Linking accounts and disclosing privacy are two things I prefer to avoid, but not always possible.

Since I was too busy coop cleaning to take pics of my chickens today, here is a spring photo of visiting neighborly chickens:

The white ones, I believe, are Brahmas? I have really enjoyed their laid back and people-oriented personalities. The other chickens from this flock, not unlike most visitors, generally look for food, use the bathroom, and leave 😄

*edited to unlink "a.mazon" 🙄
They are looking like a professional dance group. Get them on x factor you could be in the money

Nerfed the camera again. One of the selector dials moves when it's in my pocket. As Manue's thread shows, chickens look a lot better in Mediterranean light. It's something I miss and it's very noticable. Failing a move, a camera better suited to low light and colour sensitivity might do the trick for pictures.

The rains back. Not with a vengance, more akin to the last drops from a shower head.

Everybody came out and stayed out except at one point when it rained properly for a few minutes. The caked mud is coming off the legs and when I opened them up most were reasonably dry.

It's raining here from early evening, thank goodness my girls are warm and dry

How do you handle spilling and waste ?
wild birds and rats? ;)

I buy only pellets, the smaller stuff turns more to dust than feed. In the non snow times I throw out a measured amount twice a day, otherwise they fend for themselves in their large fenced area for "please sir, I'd like some more" food. I do fill the hanging feeder in the coop during winter months, not sure how everyone gets their share though.

Tina just loved the front garden in the sunshine a few days ago. She has been here for 14 months this month and really enjoying her life

I had to leave them today and I really think she was waiting for me before going to bed.

I've been thinking on similar lines concerning feed spill.
I would like to change over to a mash but there isn't a chance that C will be bothered with the extra work.
The problem with the assortment of feed trays there are at the moment is they all tip over when a chickens stands on the edge. Some hens just have to get their feet in the feed and scratch it out.

I'm going to try a couple of these I think. I'll find something to put in the middle to weigh it down.

Something like that is what I’m looking for.
That looks tippy to me.... hopefully the weight would offset that

I have what I know as a hog pan. ... Similar to this, but was cheaper at local farm store.
Little Giant Farm & Ag HP-3 3 Gallon Rubber Feed Pans https://a.co/d/7qfzhpl
I saw something similar at my local farm store. Next time I go I’ll take a measure tape with me to make sure the feeder will fit inside. This looks like it would work.

I would prefer pelleted feed, but the local milled stuff is so good (U_stormcrow checked the proteins & amino acid profiles and said it was a very good one), that I sacrifice the occasional spilled & wasted feed for the nutrition.

That is the sweetest story. She looks very happy!
First part we did one side, today the other side we did.
Just the two of us we work so well together.View attachment 3324772
Coming along great! Can’t wait to see when you’re finished!

18.5 left now Michelle. There is a sick looking Legbar that I don't think will live much longer. She's got crop problems and ascitis and that means liver problems plus probably other organs.
Best estimate is she is 6 or 7 years old. She was a rescue.
They've done well over the summer. I was pretty sure there would be a few deaths. The only surprise was the last Legbar that died.
Aw, sorry to hear that. I know you don’t like those sympathy remarks, but it still makes me a little sad when a chicken dies. I didn’t know about her, since I’ve been on able to keep up very well on BYC. I had to put Cashew down, the buff Orpington who mothered three chicks, a month or so ago. She had ascites that was affecting her breathing and progressing rapidly. An Avian Vet was not able to draw very much fluid off or provide much relief. It seem like she was going to continue to decline, and I did not want her to suffocate so I had her euthanized. She had started crowing several months back, and her comb had gotten much larger and fleshier than it was before. I thought something might be up with her hormones. She had started squatting for me, but didn’t like to be handled, even though she had before. I figured it was from discomfort. Even though she had started squatting, she did not produce an egg. Poor baby. Avian Vet thought it was likely cancer. Just like everybody says, now that I am getting more experience, I am finding that it’s usually cancer or some other infectious laying disorder that’s killing them. Also, in my case, as you know, they’ve had obesity and fatty liver problems.

You may remember when she took the chicks to my lap. I’m having trouble finding that picture at the moment. Anyway, in the weeks before I had her euthanized, Cashew would follow me into the coop after I let them out in the morning. I know now she was trying to tell me something. I think she was trying to tell me she wasn’t feeling well and asking for help. Poor girl. I miss her.
