Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Chatter tax:
Genevieve and Estella are in the coop with everyone else but are very wary about coming out of their area. It is set up so they can escape several ways from the other chicks and the Sultans, but the larger birds can’t squeeze into their area.

The black chick, named Mabel by my daughter, is getting red shoulder feathers and definitely a cockerel.

One of the Spitzhauben’s checking out the crumble my daughter is holding for it. I can’t decide if it’s male of female. It’ll be 17 weeks on Monday, no signs of saddle feathers or spiky crest feathers, but has had large wattles and there’s a pretty prominent comb in those crest feathers.
Male or female, it sure is a lovely bird❤️

Threw a bag of dried leaves on the snow to get them to come out of the run. The past few days I would try to let them out, and theywould look at the snow and turn right around. I remembered I saved some leaves!

After a bit, they went in to bathe. Maybe they instinctively know bugs can come on leaves, and set to clean off. Although they have a huge run to move in, they all decided this area had the best dust. SEVEN birds in this pile! 😂 One pullet claimed the dust bath bin to herself, which is coincidentally right next to where this pile ended up. It should be chicken see, chicken do, not monkey see, monkey do. Lol

Happy to see Henry! Curious to know how he is taking Matilda's absence thus far. She was one of the head hens, correct?
Glad to see his legs/feet shaping up!
I'm not expecting to any major reactions from Henry. He's been through a lot. He had six or seven of his hens killed when a fox got into the run before I started at the allotments. He's seen ten hens die and four new arrivals since I've been going to the allotments. Hens have been coming and going for his entire life.
One of the Ex Battery hens and of course Lima have been working hard to become his new favourites.

Good morning x Batts, not as cold today here like 38.
Nice to have a afternoon to yourself.
I always feel kinda guilty if I don't do the tables. Get to see what is up with them.
Me too. If I wasn't sure they had been fed and watered I would have gone anyway. The coop hasn't been cleaned out which is less than ideal, but getting fed is more important.
