Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I did start such a list although I haven't updated it for a long time.

I read the article about free ranging again.
One thing made me laugh. This Bee šŸ person must have made a joke saying Red Island red are good heritage breeds for free ranging. My bantam RIR is way to slow and can’t fly like my Dutch snd Janice can. If there is one who is vulnerable in my flock it is Katrientje. My silly bantam RIR.
Do post about it here.:love
And I thought I better not bother or annoy you with broody and chick stuff. 😁

Okay, no problem to post here too. I made a new thread too in the meantime. https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...d-11-hatching-eggs-🪺-🪺.1574045/#post-26740207

You are all more than welcome to post anything about chickens on the thread. What I've been trying to prevent is stuff about cars, boats, planes, dogs, cats, horses etc etc and of course politics and religion.

Wet and chilly. We are supposed to be heading for a few dry days and maybe even a bit of sunshine as from tomorrow.:fl
Everybody came out for an hour or so.

This taking pictures with one hand close up isn't as easy as I would like. I would like to do short videos and I would if I could host them on BYC.
Even Fret puts up with a crop and vent check while she's on the roost bar. I have a theory about this of course.:p

Official sundown is a few minutes past 8pm. Henry went to roost at 7.15. Being a large chap getting through the pop door is a bit of a squeeze. You may remember I put an extra piece of plastic on the bottom outside of the pop door to prevent noses and paws from pushing the pop door open from the bottom. This has had an unforseen benefit for Henry in particular. The step inis now quite wide compared to the single plasic edge that was and Henry's foot spans both the new and old section and he looks a lot more comfortable getting into the coop now.

If you dive into the possibilities of posting on Youtube (or similar) its easy to enter the video’s here on BYC. You are smart enough to learn how Shad.
Most smartphones are quit good in making short videoā€s. You only need to buy a a tripod for your smartphone. And if you want to add the sounds of chickens, a microphone with fluf (like the head of a silkie) against wind noises.
Cutting the good parts out of what you film and assembling is not hard to do either. There are several free tools/apps for that.

It's not the technical side that's the problem. I don't like Utube's what can and can't be shown policy or much else about the company come to that.

Warmish and the sun shone for a while.
A couple I like were at the allotments and the chickens got out on to the allotments for a couple of hours. The worming finishes this Sunday and then I can think about what to do with the feeding arrangements to make them more rat proof.

It's great to see the chickens in the flowery areas and enjoying the sunshine! On nice dry, sunshiny days, is Henry still one of the first to go roost, or does he reserve his early roosting habits for wet/cold weather days only?

Tax of my outdoor bird (bantam hen) meeting my indoor bird (parrotlet). Thoughts were undoubtedly thunk by both parties, but in the end, my hen wasn't quite sure what to think about the small green chicken anymore than the small green chicken was sure how to introduce himself to a large white parrotlet that wouldn't chirp. Awkward silence ensued for a bit.

Thank you. I have read some of those and I will read the others.
Any chance of an update 😊?

Let's hear it then. You can't leave us on a cliffhanger like this.

I think the point of beekissed article is that there are a number of factors and aptitudes that make a good free ranging chickens, and flying is only one of them.
I have only four truly free ranging chickens and have only watched them for a year so I can't draw significant conclusions. But I would say that the best flyer, Merle, is not the best free ranger. While flying long range and high does give her an advantage, she is far too daring, often wanders alone far from the flock, and doesn't always heed the rooster's warnings. LƩa, in the other hand, is a correct flyer but she is also very cautious and smart- she has figured out that if she searches well she will most often find a hole to crawl under netting or fencing. She always listen to the rooster's warning. I would bet on her.
Gaston is a mutt but he looks a lot like a RIR, and he is good at free ranging.
Katrientje may be just a specially silly RIR 😊.

LƩa doesn't have looks for her, she's at the bottom of her flock, but I would bet on her free ranging skills.
