Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

If you're really interested, yeah I can pm you. It's nothing big though, I just had to ascribe personhood ethics to commercial poultry farming to show I was paying attention in class
I would be interested in reading it too.

Nope, I don't think it is too large. It's far far better than many I've seen and read about.
What I do think is that if I had built it I might have added a very much smaller inner coop for them to roost in. It wouldn't need to be anything fancy, just a simple box with a perch in it.
That is an interesting idea.
They do have a choice of roost including one that is in a more enclosed area. They use that during the day for communal preening seasons after breakfast, but only on a couple of occasions has anyone (Minnie) chosen to stay there overnight.
I do have a box inside the coop which is my hospital ward (and where I brooded the Roadrunners. I hadn’t thought of keeping that open as a roosting option.
I will have to ponder on that.
🤔

I guess he must have asked a lot of chickens whether or not they would prefer to be on a tropical Island sipping fortified Nutridrench and eating crab meat with the local fruit and veg instead of sheltering from a gale in minus twenty centigrade temperatures eating a vegan diet and no space to run around.:D
Pray tell, what do you think my flock thought of this...

Did they come out in that?
The tribes used to come out when it snowed in Catalonia but they were not keen on it and headed to the nearest bush with snow free ground under it.

There is a very fair test for how cold is too cold.
Those of you with those creepy furry things that travel around on the back of witches broomstick could try seeing what "the cat" thinks of living outside, deprived of it's place by the fire. After all, cats have all that lovley fur to keep them warm and I'm sure they've been bred to be cold hardy.

Here's my chickens this morning at -22C
View attachment 2930765some of them definitely huddle together. But they aren't even all on the same roosting bar when there's clearly still room up there. 🤷‍♀️

Younger chickens all pile in the nesting boxes though, make a nice mess for me to clean out every morning. View attachment 2930764
One year ago today this was occurring outside the coop complex.

This is how they spent their day. By choice.

I've had many a cat go outside into the snow on its own leaving the warmth of the house for adventure. My 2 cats right now are a Maine Coon and Norwegian Forest cat. Both breeds were discovered living out in the wilds in the snow.

I'm not certain what your point here is. Most animals if offered warmth would prefer to stay there.
