Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

We got a sudden hard pouring rain that made the chickens scatter for cover. Enough to help tenderize the grass and other greens they nibble on. A young rooster mutt made my day. He hatched out mid March and just chased down a pullet from last mid September and showed her what he was made of like a pro.

A decent amount of rain today. Two and a half hours. The rain stopped as I left for the allotments which was very handy. Henry, Fret and Carbon were itching to get out and hunt the bugs the rain brings to the surface. They ventured futher afield today and visited Lima's favourite forage spots.
Fret has laid another egg.

I'm going to have to pull the spinach and see if I can rescue a few leaves. I'll try again. Under less heated conditions spinach grows well here, or at least it has for others.

I haven't had good luck with spinach. I felt like a failure, but my step dad once told me, "Spinach grows where it wants to grow."

Look at that pretty... Speckled Sussex?
Yes, she’s my favorite current chicken. Curious yet not overly obnoxious. Chatty but not screechy. A perfect combination of backyard chicken. 😊

Spinach bolted here quickly also. Have you ever tried Swiss chard? It tastes great if you like steamed spinach, or baby leaves in a salad, and will grow all season long if you pick only the bottom leaves.

Same here. I planted spinach last year and it didn't even come up ..... until this spring and then it promptly bolted LOL
I like the chard and freeze a bunch . It doesn't overwinter here
