Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

There is no justification to treat any kind of animal like those chickens are. It's simply beyond cruel. I'm an omnivore and will continue to be one as that was the way I created. My dad taught us early in life to take care of livestock. He refused to withhold feed from an animal on the way to a processing plant. I know the reasons for doing so but he just didn't like the idea of any animal dying hungry. Hunters for large game animal do not wait for them to not have food in their digestive track so the reason other processors may be just to save them a pound or dollar or Euro. I don't know. I will not withhold feed when I process hatched for food chickens over the next couple of weeks. I can tell the difference in food chickens that I raise and those I raise as pets. I have a dozen or so that are pets that will live out a long life here I hope.

3 hours today. I managed to mis the rain and had a pleasant quiet evening with Henry, Fret and Carbon.
I've found a rescue date from one organisation (29/07/2023). I've put in an application. They are distributing from various locations around the UK and one of those is here in Bristol. I have been assured that these hens go from the battery, into a van and driven to the appropriate distribution point. A major plus in my book.
I have also found a local farm that has asked on social media if people are interested in taking any of their spent hens. I'm waiting to hear from them.

Despite some mackerel still left in the tray they just wanted out on the allotments.

Some mixed grains for supper.

Having done an allotment tour they got onto the roost bar. As soon as I started weeding my plot they were back out again, led by Carbon who is the most food motivated of the three.:D

I haz wegitables.:weeTwo courgettes growing and some tiny tomatoes which will be touch and go whether its too late in the year for them to grow and rippen. Picked some wild rocket and dug one onion for supper, plus a few beans donated by the women who keeps that plot I keep eyeing up shown in a post above.

Tonight my mind had a head on collision with Dark Cornish cockerel that thinks he is half Bald Eagle. Yea he took some meat off of my arm when I tried to remove him from an unapproved roost. It bled out ok and now my private duty nurse that I sleep with will wrap it up so I don't stain the sheets. On top of everything else I counted to make sure I had all 12 of them in the coop and mysteriously I had 13 tonight. This morning there were only 12 still. In the daylight I'll see if I gained a roo or a pullet.

I just want to point out, with my myth-buster hat on, that those hens lay eggs despite the conditions.

Edited to add, to avoid confusion, the myth in question being that "

2. Coop Environment

If birds are stressed, egg production may suffer. Stress comes in many forms – predators, over-crowding, aggressive hens, loud noises, too much heat or cold, poor nutrition and illness. Check the environment to be sure there aren’t stressors in the area."
