Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Please, don't make the mistake I made, and check under her wings very regularly.
I have a cute runt little hen, Piou-piou, who's in love with my big roo Gaston, and this resulted in quite a bit of drama. Because she used to be very feral and active, I never noticed she was wounded until the moment she just laid down because she couldn't walk anymore. She had to spend almost two months in a crate, had twice antibiotics courses, got stitches at the vet the second time the wound opened. I still have to keep them separated, she does all she can to join him.
Piou-piou this morning ( she plucks any feathers that grow back)

She is fine. She is all over the place during the day and now has gone off feeding. She is able to free range all day long and comes to visit the roo now off and on during the day. She even roosts near him during the night.

They were fed and watered before we left. 2 hour drive without water to spill in the van didn't hurt him a tiny bit. As for being hot it was after dark driving and in the rain with the AC on. He has the life of Riley compared to a battery rooster. And now he will have an even better life with 10 RIR hens in a pen of his own to keep them fertile....
Our Easter Egger rooster Stilton is awesome. He's a big tidbitter and a valiant dude. And he makes great tax, imho.

I just took my 3.5 week old pullets down to the nursery run with 6.5 week old pullets. They are all out exploring and introducing themselves. We sat down there with them for 2 hours and no hostilities. I think they are close enough in age, that this is a good time to integrate them. (we are still checking on them every 15 minutes.. ) It is hot, so we don't have to worry about them getting cold. I am not sure about leaving them to roost overnight, I guess we will have to see if they follow the older girls in, when the time comes.

:lau What is a rooster doing in a battery?
Factory farmers don’t like to spend feed on non-layers.

And even more important: what is the life of Riley all about? Wiki doesn’t give any answers and I can’t recall ever seing a life of Riley tv series or film

Great that it worked out so nicely. I tried integrating 11 week old with 6 werk old chicks once, which was not a great succes.

Do you really think 3,5 week old pullets will roost? Mine always slept in nestboxes at such an age. In a nestbox it’s easier to keep each other warm
From 6-8 weeks they often started to roost.

I found a definition here:

There was a radio show with that title in the 1940s, and a movie and television show in the 1950s.

Oh he sure does! What are you shooting those photos with? If you don't mind my asking..
That's with a Sony a7iii with a 100-400mm lens. I got a base-level Sony mirrorless camera body 10 years ago, felt like it was easy to use, so have stuck with that system ever since.

Tax is a sneaky shot of Speckled Sussex snuggling at nap time, and one of Andre serenading run bunny Lefty Randy (that lens is great for candid chicken pics).

Battery roosters in a meat breeding for eggs facility. Crowded with no grass ever. Not in layer houses. Life of Riley is from the 50's. I was quite young when it aired and TV was still black and white. Wiki gets a failing grade on that one.
