Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Just chiming in to say that Henry is so round and endearing, he seems like such a big sweetheart. I love seeing his pictures.

I had a Light Sussex called Queenie who was so big and round and was my absolute favourite hen. She lived to be 8 years old (we only had her for her last year), was a calm and steadfast matriarch, and a curious, friendly garden companion. Her daughter, Keithabella, unfortunately did not inherit almost any of her mom's characteristics.

Seeing Henry makes me long for another Light Sussex friend.

Rain all morning. By the time I got to the allotments the rain had stopped and the sun sort of shone for a bit. We all got out until the next cloud bank rolled over and sent us into the coop extension for 15 minutes.
Forcast for tomorrow is rain all day with 40mph wind gusts; what fun.

There is something not entirely right about young Fret.

In one coop I have a few hens that try to get under the spare rooster. He is not happy about it.

I have thought the same about Henry! He manages to garner respect as a rooster all while appearing to resemble a dumpling with a pretty tail 😆

Keithabella is a very unique name!

Henry doesn't seem to mind. Normally at roosting time Fret will try to roost next to Henry and I've often seen her partially under one of his wings. Currently she's moulting which is I assume why she's roosting on her own. However, if she's uncomfortable next to other chickens what on earth is she doing trying to squeeze underneath Henry.

Fret is laying during this moult but isn't crouching for Henry. Hopefully this will mean she gets a full set of feathers on before she starts crouching again.A further plus point is she's putting on a bit of weight.

He's not a cuddely rooster. He puts up with me touching him reluctantly and if necessary, I can pick him up. From what I've heard he is a lot less tolerant of other people.

I would attempt it by public transport if I had a time and a place. It seems people turn up in the general area and then wait for instruction as to the exact location/s.
While I do understand some of the problems, some organizations are markedly better than others.
Sounds more like an illegal rave than a chicken rescue..lol
