Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Eula is a gorgeous looking hen; if a bit fierce looking in the picture.:love
You read her right. She's Head Hen Donna's muscle, as far as I can tell.

It seems unlikely when I type it, but it happens over and over: it seems like Donna will shoot a bird a certain look, and then Eula stomps over and pecks the bird on Donna's behalf.

Everybody is sick of courgettes even the rats!
Hahaha.

Marrows are what zucchini turns into, the monstrous marrows you find when you've skipped checking for a day or two! I had one that was as big as the bottom of my wheelbarrow last season 🤣
I grate and dehydrate zucchini and use it as a vegetable bulker in soups and sauces and meat mixes all year old. Makes a fairly decent breadcrumb substitute.

Zucchini makes a good loaf of bread, it's like banana bread.

I have the recipe if you would like to have it.

One of my favourite recipes
Tasty greek recipe for zucchini pie easy to make:
  • Olive oil spray, to grease
  • 4 sheets (25 x 25cm) or 8 smaller sheets of frozen butter puff pastry, just thawed
Filling (mix it in a bowl)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 large of 2 small zucchinis, coarsely grated
  • 150g -200 g feta, drained, crumbled
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill or basil if you prefer the taste of basil
  • 1 piece (toe?) of garlic squezzed or chopped very fine
  • 1 onion chopped fine
  • pinch of pepper

Use a oven dish/bowl spray olive oil on the surface. Add a layer of the puff pastry. Add the filling. Slice the leftover of the puff pasty and decorate in on top of the filling.

  • 25 -30 min in the oven on 180-200 C.

The chicks here are 4 weeks old today, and still with Janeka though only Betws stays close to her all the time now. No obvious colouring of combs or popping of wattles so jury's still out on genders, but Skomer is noticeably bigger than the other two, and still barely feathered.
