Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Thank you. Seven hatched, one declined and died. So six are left. Please, PLEASE let there be some females. My last hatch of 5 was all males.

Heading to the auction:

I looked at Fret's most recent chicks and saw three boys and one girl for a moment.:lol:
With a bit of an expansion and of course two or more going broody, statistics say I should have enough males to eat chicken a couple of times a month; small portions naturally.:D

Headbanger MJ!:love
Truth is, I like genuinely creative expression in all its forms - even very very old music.

I can't stand bland.

Tax.

That's what nutritionists and people who make money in the food/ feed business want us to believe.
Well, there's your proof combined with the feeds they produce. Doesn't get much simpler than commercial feed so I guess they don't really understand nutrition either.:p

Someone who doesn't have a garden of any sort can't let their chickens forage (and probably shouldn't have chickens).
Steady!

Erm, :p Yeah well. You can't be a farmer unless you've got a farm goes down like a lead balloon on this forum as does you can't be a chicken mama unless you're a hen.:D
'Free your chickens' should be my slogan! :D
There are many chapters to write on this topic. One of my earliest comments here on BYC is to understand chicken behaviour one has to let them behave. A lot of the ignorance is because scientists and keepers alike are observing prisoners, and with any species, that is likely to produce wrong conclusions about the true nature of the chicken.

Nutrition is a quite complicated matter.

The chickens that lived 100 years ago and the old heritage breeds we have nowadays are not the same chickens as new the high production breeds or the hybrids that were developed for factory farming.

Its not so obvious to see because of all the variations in the looks. But in fact with chickens happened about the same as what happened with boars 🐗 and pigs 🐷 . Or primeval cattle and milk-cows. There was a discussion and research in the Netherlands about changing the high protein feed for cows to a feed with less protein for the wellbeing of our environment. The amount of proteins increased over the years.

Why not less protein because the NOx levels are way too high in the Netherlands, and this would be a way to address the problem.
Research concluded this was impossible because the Dutch cows would get health problems. The production of milk increased, and the milk production cows had changed too in the last decades.

My conclusion:
A chicken that lays over 300 eggs a year has another feed demand than the old chicken breeds that lay 60 -120 eggs a year.
I agree. But, we should be able to cater for that with home made feeds.

Ex Batts good afternoon one and all!

Tea is ready.

Temperature is in the 80s mostly sunny.

Have a great day!

I was out and about this morning for blood work, go to the bank, stop at store, to come homeand pick up our puppy.

The puppy decided to chew up a bottle of Medical Marijuana and ate the three gummies in it.

She was standing very still and almost fell over on her side, then she would take off running through the house, then she laid down and didn't want to get up.
This was a very scary situation and she did not get to come home as of yet.
