Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Glad to hear that you think it's a good
I would regard their desire to be close to the broody as good, though in that precise roosting position they could poop onto the nest, which would be bad. So I'd try to set up something where they can be close, without being able to contaminate the nest with feces.

thing. Especially glad that Kolovos is the one roosting there. I haven't seen him have too close of a relationship with this particular pullet, but I'm glad she's supporting her in her broody endeavours.

With the son leaving within the week (most likely), hopefully the chicks and the broody will be accepted by Kolovos.

I try to spot clean the nest each day while she's away, not sure I can find a way to keep them from roosting there. If I use the vegetable crate method for roosting time as well, she'll be pretty much tapped all day

Got there at 9.30 am to let them out. Spent a couple of hours there and went home. Back again at 5 pm until 8.30 pm.
I got the auto pop door fitted and working again.

Someone told me that if you have two broodies with chicks at the same time sometimes they will nest together...

Tamar is in the back, a lower rank hen. Rahab and her four got in after Tamar and her two chicks were settled in the box.

I didn't see it as benevolent, but probably a display of dominance, so I played chicken Tetris and gave them each their own box. I was concerned a chick might suffocate or be injured if the hens started pushing each other.

I had more trouble with separated hens than with co-brooders or co-mama’s.
The separated hens (2x) who waited for their own chicks pecked on chicks of the other hen who hatched nearby. The first time I relocated the broody with the eggs. The second time I gave the eggs to the broody with one chick and closed the coop she was in for all other hens. I locked the pecker out to break her broodiness. After a few days and to my surprise an older hen sneaked in when I gave food and fresh water. She was caring real good for the chick and still is after 10 weeks. The original broody left the chick after approx 6 weeks.

The broody-mama Katrientje and co-mama Pearl with 1 chick.

Idris is not 1 till August, so it's back to jail for her :(
I'm sure you've mentioned it before, and I'm sure your reason for doing so is very good, but why don't you let the under 1 year olds hatch?

For maturity reasons, like more of a chance to break, or over commit?
