Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Two hours today. Wet basically.
The adults retired after eating supper. Even Mow who is weather resilient wasn't interested in more than a few beakfulls of grass and a short stroll around the plots.

More Sylph who has decided the best place to wait for the adults to settle in the coop and her siblings to come home is on my head!

I wish you could send me some of your rain.
I would gladly if I could. I don't mind the rain or the grey at the moment. Bright sunlight kills me now I have shingles. I've got the kit for it this year. The first year back in the UK I bought some high tech supposedly waterproof clothing that just didn't perform and was a complete waste of money. I think I've got it right this year but it's been an expensive kitting out.
The only thing I just can't find is waterproof footware that isn't a wellington.

Apostrophe is very doable/ searchable in a database. It seems whoever made the standard was lazy.
that figures! It's so easy to blame the technology when it is actually the operator that can't / can't be bothered to do it.

There was a phrase doing the rounds here a few years back: 'computer says no'. Well suited in the modern world for everyday denials for no good reason.

Old tech might work better than so-called high tech. HRH used waxed jackets. Yes they're expensive and they need to be re-waxed periodically, but wax is hydrophobic and it works.

What a nice way of saying that 🤣.
Age has something to do with it I think, at least that's what I've seen here. They get less eager to go under the rain past their second hatch day.

My ex-batt Blanche would have done well in British weather, before she lost confidence and sight from one eye in a hawk attack.

That reminds me of when I visited Iceland. I had bought a very expensive gore-tex jacket that year for my first backcountry skiing raid, at least it was very expensive for me at that time and certainly the most I had ever spent on a piece of textile. It had actually done very well during the raid under snow. From the first drench we took in Iceland, however, it was clear it would be totally useless- I was soaked after half an hour !
I have had some luck with hunting clothes, they are the right mix of technical and sturdy.
