Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

No I don't. I have one cookery book which I rarely look at and that's a book on slow cooker cooking. I used to have a recipe note book but it got lost in the move from Spain.
Well if you want to restock, there are usually loads in charity shops, often selling for just a few pence. With pages that don't go to sleep while you're getting the next step done, and no inane repetition, or adverts. Marguerite Pattern's 1000 Favourite Recipes is very comprehensive, has not let me down, and her Christmas cake recipe is great. I can post a photo of the page if you want to have a go at it...?

A rather chilly hour and a half. At least it didn't rain. I'm fairly confident that my clothing is up to the winter all bar gloves. Just can't find gloves that are warm enough and easy to get on and off. I can't do much wearing gloves and I prefer to handle the chickens with bare hands.

Anyway, I'm quite pleased with myself. I got it right. Tull is at point of lay. She's been running in front of Henry and crouching and Henry has obliged although Tull isn't givng Henry enough time to make a proper job of it. Tull crouched three times for Henry in the hour and half I was there.
Tull's comb is flushing more and less red. A couple more days and the colour difference between her comb and her sisters should be more obvious.
Henry of course has suddenly gone all manly and is strutting around crowing and digging, calling Tull for anything he finds. Sylph responds as well but Tull sort of barges past her a bit like the mums on the buses with kids in pushchairs. I've got shin bruises to prove it.

Terrible picture but this is Tull following Henry as he forages for her.

Same again but Sylph is following alnog behind.

Thanks. I've got a basic recipe which I can tune up so I'll see how I go with that.

*I* barely did! The cats & dog water bowl froze over. INSIDE! I spent two days bundled into my bed, wearing layers of winter clothing (including my coat) with the dog under the blankets for extra warmth!
I recall during one cold snap (-20°F) the furnace died. Husband was working 3rd shift. I called the landlord, he said he'd come over in the morning. I was not amused. I put my toddlers in footed sleepers, then their heavy coats and snow pants, and tucked them into bed with me. No frostbite, but brr.

That was in Connecticut.

I'm not much of a cook, but am interested in seeing the recipe.

You probably get proper cold whereas I'm crying at 5C.

My second-worst Christmas ever was when the furnace for my apartment quit on Christmas Eve. Landlord said, "Someone will be out as soon as possible." Which was December 26th. I spent the holiday in bed, under my electric blanket.

I could be mistaken but it looks like Tull's comb and wattles are getting a deeper shade of red. Time to tune up the nest boxes I think. I haven't seen her take any interest in the nests yet apart from a recent interest on her part in getting into the rosemarry bush seen in the above pictures.
I would be alert and check. I suppose you want her to lay inside too.
I can't really explain. It's just something about when she sees treats, or rather doesn't.
Maybe it’s the pecking order? Or she prefers something different?

I find most recipes on the internet nowadays.

Whisky my Amrock cockerel thought he could spend the night with the adult hens instead of keeping his siblings company a couple of evenings. Gin and Tonic are not ready yet to start laying. And Whiskey is eager to show his manhood.

I picked him up from the roost in the extension of the main coop and moved him to the playhouse for 3 nights in a row. Because he is too loud in the more open extension. The darkened playhouse is further away from our house and the neighbours. And his voice is a bit smothered in there when he crows his morning serenade.
Obviously he was not amused when I picked him up in the dark. Glad 😌 he was back in the playhouse by himself tonight.
