Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

One and a half hours today. Colder than yesterday at 2C with a wind rather than a breeze. I tried doing Mow's legs again this afternoon. I'm going to have to enlist some help. I'm not able to clear the feathering away from higher up her leg and hold and apply the vaseline and iodine mix; a hand short in fact.
Henry's got a new outbreak, that needs dealing with. Tull's and Sylph's legs are much improved. They've shed most of the worst of the damged scales.

Fret hackle flashed Tull this afternoon. Fret seems to be making sure that they show the right amount of respect. Tull looked most put out and stood there with her head hung not looking at Fret. See how it goes.

It's about this distance from the coop that I go and herd them back towards the coop. They move so quickly from one place to the next I worry they may slip out the gate. I'm sure they would head back but I would like to teach the if possible that further than the last growing plot is not in their territory.

Thi s one thinks it's a chicken. It arrives every day shortly after I arrive at the field.

I've heard crows keep bad birds away. Befriend it. Maybe train it to gift you money from the streets.

That funky chicken there at the end, does it forage/beg for food? Or just hang out?
Good grief no. It hops down and helps itself darting in and out of the chickens. Sometimes,:D usually Sylph or Tull, chases it away. It just sits back on the fence and waits.

Fret is making sure her seniority is understood by the youngsters!
Tull and Sylph have been making it obvious that they are laying eggs and Henry is mating them. Sylph was put out when she stopped laying and her sister took over. It all goes to the pullets head when they are young. I was talking to Fret about it. Fret tells me she just says, "been there, done that, you lot were the result." "What do you think, good choice or not?" That shuts them up apparently.:p

That's a Jackdaw. They're larger than crows and have that grey patch at the back of their heads. They're not fond of hawks or ground predators and they will mob one given the opportunity.

For the food it knows you bring of course! :D

I meet a family of sparrows and a few robins at the feed stations when I arrive every morning. The bolder ones among them will behave like your jackdaw

and here too it's the youngsters at the bottom of the pecking order who chase them away. Quincy especially.

Talking of whom, I think her juvenile tree hugging was prompted by her rank; now she and Aberglasny are all grown up, they roost in the coops with everyone else. A is certainly laying; Q I'm not sure but she looks the part now. Or maybe they're just doing it until this cold snap has passed.
